MULTI PURPOSE SPINNING ROD

Post by Randy Walker »

I am looking to buy another spinning rod and would like some feedback on what you all think. It would be used for darthead, shaky, small tubes and maybe splitshot. I would also like to be able to use the rod at the delta on a tough bite or skipping tubes under docks - so it nds to have some backbone to it - and light weight without killing my bank account (GLX) please let me know what you think I should look at.

Thanks a bunch

Walker,

While I was in Redding, Steve Biechman (Steve's Custom Fishing Rods) showed me a new rod he is just starting to build that sounds like would fit the build. 2 power rod with the new titanium guides, split handle...and customized as you need. Priced around the Loomis IMXs or less I believe.

Give him a hollar or if you are gonna be around the Delta at the end of the month, he will be there with Rods in tow :)

Maybe checkout the new Powell series spinning rods like the 701 or the 702. They are both great all purpose for what your looking for and a little more affordable than loomis.

I have an older 6.5 medium weight GL2 that I love. I fish it for tubes and dart heads...has a nice back bone and range to fish lighter dart heads into heavier tegax rigged tubes, etc. Great action, great senstitivity, and I'd imagine that in the last 5 years, things have come a long way.

For the budget minded the ML and M Crucial drop shot rod is great for those first few techniques you list (I have one of each in the 7'2"), but you may need to go to the 6' 8" MH for the Delta and dock skipping. They are light and sensitive for the money and have an over the counter $15 lifetime warranty. I like them better than my Loomis GL3s.

My only complaint with the rod is the hook hanger was designed around the drop shot and its not the best location when using other techniques. Hangers are cheap enough that I'll probably add them to my rods.

Look for a used rod!! I found a 7' MH IMX for $150 at a tackle store before!!

Kistler takes care of me and I really enjoy their helium series. Expensive, buy awesome if you have carpal tunnel

Look at the Shimano Crutical series. Good rods at a cheap price. If you are going to go for a made in china rod (ie, shimano, Powel, Bass Pro, etc...) Shimano has good quality vs price. Powell rods are the best made in china rods I've seen yet. I hate giving my $$ to a communist regime, but these days your choices are mostly made in china.

Good luck! 8)

Check out the Powell 702 It is perfect for what you want. I like it better than most of my St. Croix elite rods.

I have a 6'6" 6-12lb GLX spinning rod that I feel is probably the most versatile size/rating. It is great for many bass techniques like dropshotting, small ripbaits, dartheads, etc. It is soft enough for 6 and 8lb but has some muscle down low for big fish. I use mine primarily for Snook and Redfishing here in FL, but when I lived in CA it was my most used Bass spinning rod.

Good job Paul (pat-pat) I think you have very useful information. The 782 is an excellent choice for up to 3/8 oz lures, I can’t speak for the GLX ($335.00) but I have an IMX 782 and an IMX 783 ($230.00). Neither is the best reservoir, deep water, drop shot rod, but for the described uses they are both very good choices. I would recommend the 783 which is a little more rod, 8-15 lb, medium heavy, fast action up to 5/8 oz lure. Having said that, the next spinning rod I purchase will be a 7’ medium heavy (some brand) I heard Powell has one in the works but if it doesn’t come out soon, it will be an IMX 844. I don’t know but I don’t think the GLX is $100.00 better. What the heck might even try a Steve’s Custom Rod! Sorry I had to throw that in.

Good luck
