Motorguide digital steering trolling motors any good?

Post by optichamp »

The old 82lb Tour model croaked on the Champ yesterday. I've dropped it off for repairs, hopefully it won't be too expensive.

While I wait for word, I've checked out new MotorGuide motors, some of which are steered by cable, others by digital steering. Getting rid of a cable seems appealing, but about a year ago I tried one of the wireless Motorguides. The noise that unit made - a "beep" anytime you changed speeds, and a "beep rrrrrrr" anytime you steered it got on my nerves, and I went back to the Tour model. How quiet are the current Motorguide steering motors? Any comments or complaints? Thanks!

i replaced my MG 80 tour to a digital 82 (cables)....... very nice and smooth. I have never tried the wireless version but i dont have any complaints with the cables.

it takes too long to rotate the prop around 360 degrees. the cable steering trolling motors are a lot quicker, which comes in handy when parking in tight dock slips.

alot quicker??? what does that mean. the digital steering rotates
360 in less than a second.

I think there is a difference between digital trolling motor. some have cable that turns the motor and some have electric servos that turn it. I have the latter on mine and fish cables with my friends who have bass boats, and the steering with the electric servo steering is slower and less accurate than using the cables. but they do occupy less space on the deck....
