Mercury Optimax Engine Oil

Post by FISHorDIE »

Question to anyone who may have knowledge.

I have a 2006, 200hp Opti less than 10 hours. The oil in reservior was low so I purchased Optimax oil. Before adding the oil I noticed the color of the oil in reservior has a greenish/blue tent, but the optimax oil I purchased is brownish in tent.

Is it possible the dealer used the wrong oil and if so what should I do at this point. Appreciate any advice.

Note: At this point I have not added the brown Optimax oil.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong. You most likely purchased synthetic oil. The origional oil is premimum plus from the factory. I was told by my mercury mechanic that it's ok to change to synthetic and it's ok to mix the two.
That said, call mercury or your dealer to verify, I'm not an expert, they are.

Had the same experience. Have an '03 Opti and have used the "blueish green" for the last 3 year. Last time I bought a couple of gallons it was the browish ( synthetic ), and I mixed them. I haven't had any problems and have been through a couple of gallons since. Mechanic said there would be no issue.

I've got a 2002 Optimax 225 and had a similar issue.

I wouldn't worry about the oil in there right now. Just start using the Optimax oil and go from there.

I had used some regular 2 stroke TCW3 oil once, which is what the manual says to use if there is no Optimax oil available. It was bluish in tint as well. I went back to the Optimax as soon as I was getting low, and it's worked fine ever since. I now ONLY use Optimax oil though - even had to drive 70 miles to get it.

Im happy to know it's not going to ruin the engine running the merc premium. Im going to use the Opti oil once it gets alittle lower. It's strange to me that the dealer didnt run the preferred oil in it from the get go. Thanks for all of the info guys, it's appreciated.
