I know further west toward Los Banos West of 99 they were pulling out strippers "Lunker Punker". If you mean the Mendota Canal. Stay clear of the edge you don't want to fall in, there are lots of garbage and the current is faster than it appears.
Let us know how you fair.

Re: Mendota Slough
I always wanted to fish there when I lived in Fresno, but had no boat at the time.
There are fish in there and it looks alot like the delta. The water that fills it I beleive is from the San Joaquin River and from the Delta-Mendota canal, so anything that swims in the delta is likely to be there too, if they live through the pumps. Stripers?? Bass, catfish, crappie, bluegill etc. all are in there. I know on the south side of Whites Bridge there is a large stump flat and there are a lot of tule berms as you go north. Jack's resort across from the refuge is the only place that has a ramp that I would be comfortable with leaving my rig at.

The mendota slough is like 15 minutes from my house...lots of fun to fish! i like to fish north of 180 and yes, if your concerned about vehicle safety park at Jacks resort..the free ramp across 180 is park at your own risk..lol! i was out there couple weeks ago and there's a pretty good current going through there. If you go out there be careful..i saw a lot of wood floating down the channel...big wood! That place is a blast when the bites on...good luck out there!
