lunker punker advice

Post by spotfin »

I am contemplating buying a wooden black dog lunker punker. I would appreciate any advice on size and color. I am thinking of buying a rainbow trout color, 6 inches as opposed to delta shiner 9 inches. Can someone tell me if the rainbow trout color works in the delta for largemouth? I am hoping so, because then I can also use it at the local reservoirs. (I am not willing to buy two different colors due to the HUGE price of these lures). Would also appreciate any opinion on the 6 inch vs 9 inch for the Delta largemouths. I don't care too much about stripers and need advice on what works for largemouths in the Delta. Thanks!!!

They all work. I get just an many fish on the baby bass color as I do on the rainbow trout. Why would you think the color would make a huge difference when all the bass see's in the white bottom of the plug anyway? Dont over look the plastic ones black dog makes now.

Buy the trout or the delta shiner they will both work on the delta and the lakes with trout I them. If I only were to buy one I would buy the 9 inch. If you are loooking to save a little coin Tackle Warehouse still has a few blemished 9 inch delta shiner for sale.

You can also buy a one of the molded trout colored Punkers form BTD

That way you could get both for about the same price of one 9 inch wooden Punker

Both of the above stated options are good if it were me I'd buy the punker jr in trout to start off with. I do disagree with the post saying all the bass see is the white underbelly these baits roll side to side as you walk them showing those beautiful paint jobs off.

They might see a little bit. But I have a few of these baits that have almost all the paint gone on them. And they work just as good as the ones that are new. The paint jobs on those are works of art, I feel like I should frame them and hang them on the wall. But honestly I dont think the color makes a big difference, when they are eating punkers, they just eat them.

The only difference in color and bite I have seen is that spotted bass crush the injected clear plastic ones allot more than the wooden ones. But that could be all the rattles, I dont know.

When the bit is on IT IS ON. But, when they are finicky sometimes a little difference matters. It is a matter of opinion like anything else, such as scents. I'm looking forward to coming home for mid april to stick some donkeys fishing the punker and shell cracker.

My theory is the larger the better. I like to big baits, I have the rainbow, but would also like a 9" shiner. I have been throwing 10 - 12 inch floater swimbaits down here lately. They seem to work pretty well. I still believe big fiah like big baits. JMHO 8)
