Lifting MinnKota Maxxum In and Out of Water

Post by mak2468 »

I have a 2000 MinnKota trolling motor on my bass boat. It has the long pull string (I thing after market) to unlock to put in and take out of water.

Any ideas on adding leverage to make this process easier. I know the newer models cuts the weight in half but no excess cash to buy new motor - plus mine works great. Just a bit of a pain with only the string; especially after visiting multiple fishing spots over the day.

I would appreciate any ideas that you have been successful with.

Mine also came with a very long string. Shorten up the pull string, worked for me.

You can install the lift assist feature on your Maxxum. I did it on my 2004 model and it really makes the lifting in and out easier. Gene at the The Hook will sell and install the add-on to your troller while you wait if you give him a call and set it up. Can't remember what the cost was but way less than a new motor!

I removed the pull string from my maxxum and installed a "dog chain"- basically a short piece of metal with the plastic around it like you would use to hold a dog in your yard. put the regular handle on it, and then go through the eye in the motor (that the cord was tied to) and put a U shaped nut on the end. has held strong 5 years, no fray and no stretch when you lift it.

hard to describe but works well.
