Left Handed Baitcasters...

Post by cLanderman »

Does anyone, who is right handed, use a left hand retrieve on their baitcast reels?

I currently have a group of Fuego reels that are right handed retrieve, but have been considering buying one with a left handed retrieve for operating a light line (shaky head, etc) technique. I feel like when operating my spinning rods (which are right hand held and left retrieve) i seem to get more action, and was thinking about trying to switch hands for these lighter slower techniques on baitcast as well.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Also, if anyone has a cheap old left handed baitcast reel that they no longer use and is willing to sell, i would like to give it a try.

I am right handed and use only left handed reels. This allows me to have my reel in my hand at all times. It took me some time to get use to, but now I can't imagine using a right handed reel.
I think this has increased my hookups or my confidence.

I am left handed and use all right hand reels. I was raised this way from a kid fishing and working on the saltwater. My dad new of no such reel for left handed people. Besides my first reels were hand me downs from my dad and uncles.

Thanks for the responses guys... confirmed a lot of what I assumed. I just feel that when I have my rod in my right hand i am able to manipulate the bait on a slow retrieve a lot better.

Thanks Again, I will give it a go.

I'm right handed and have fished left handed reels for 35 years. Goes back to the standard spinning reel that has the handle on the left. Was just what I was used to. Even all my saltwater reels are lefties.
Besides. Cast with your right and then switch hands to reel it back in???? Who the %^&*%)% thought up that system???? lol

Although I am right handed, I too fish with left handed reels (thank god for my Curado's). Just a little extra information, as a teenager I skateboarded and surfed goofey foot (that included snowboarding). I also batted (baseball) and golfed as a lefty. I guess my brain is just wired this way...

Me too.

I was raised using the old Pflueger "knuckle buster" baitcasting reels (before level wind had even been invented). They were all right handed reels. Because this was anchored in my brain, I could never make the adjustment over to left-handed reels, even though the concept makes perfect sense. It's that Old dog - New tricks thing, I guess.
