LandBigFish.com FRAUD update

Post by GaryKey »

The good news is that my bank refunded my account with the $1565 lost to fraud.

The bad news is there was more frauds prior to the $1565 that went under the radar. I was talking to another poster, and he also had experienced fraud on his account and had not pinned it down to LandBigFish.com. After reading my post he concluded that it was very likely that LBF was where his CC# was compromised. He told me his frauds came in exactly $150 increments and the source on the statement always showed something Asian.

Anyhow, after hearing this I had my wife go through the last couple months of statements and look for $150.00 debits. Sure enough we had 2 in the last month and both were for exactly $150 and both were unknown Asian sources.

Here's exactly how it appeared on my online statement.

08/13/2007 TRANH THANH LINH ERLANGE 08/12TRANH THA $150.00

08/03/2007 NGUYEN TIEN MINH 817-602 08/02NGUYEN TI $150.00

I am posting this for those of you who have made purchases from LBF in the last few months. If you have, there is a possibility that your CC# hs been compromised.

Gary, thanks for the heads up! I have also been nailed by this scam. The charges to my account was $150 by a company called LUU GIA KHANH which is Vietnamese. I also have used LandBIGFISH.com recently. I have already had my card number changed.

Thanks, Howard Hughes

Gary,

Exact thing happened to me. They charged $150 on 8/5/07 and I also ordered form LBF a few days before that. I have a new card number now. If I ever find the person that did this......

Must be the season-I also learned that my CC # was stolen and used on Match.com out of the UK. I have a cabela's card and luckily they were on it fast. I've yet to hear from their investigators.
I haven't used LBF for over a year now, so they are in the clear. It really sucks, LBF was able to get me some baits I couldn't find anywhere else. It's a shame their name is getting dragged through the mud, but...
Now I did use my card last weekend at a tackle shop, and the fraudulent charges mirrored the same amount? I'm not going to mention them, it's probably just a coincidence. If it's not, I'll pass it on.

In the mean time my credit card ain't getting used on line again, secure site or not, those are the only ones I've used. Cabela points will go into a slow down mode-dang!

Beware guys.

Funny you mentioned Match.com. That fraudulent charge was also on that same statement! It was Match.com out of the U.K.

My card was stolen and used for an online playboy subscription. The wife didn't believe me until they exchange currency in Kuala Lumpar and what's worse is I had no password for Playboy Online.

They got me too.

I also used landbigfish.com, then the following month I had a $150 charge show up on my credit card. My credit card company is looking into it. My charge was to Le Huu Dat in High point N.C.

I will forward the info of this fraud to the person thaqt is investigating my claim. Needless to say, I will never use landbigfish.com again. I always use tackle wharehouse. But they didn't have what I was looking for. So I used lbf.com.

I guess it is a prime example of buyer beware. I'm sure this will all come to a head.

Good luck to all.

Hi guys!!! My name is Kim with Poor Boy's Baits. :D I understand your frustrations in your cards getting fraudulantly charged but please be assured that Land Big Fish is working on the situation. Believe me, it is not one of their employees! I spoke with Jeff personally this morning because they sell our product and don't want it to hurt our sales either. Instead of not purchasing product from them any more call your orders in. If I can be of any assistance feel free to contact me also.

By the way - this is my first visit to the forum and must say, it's really nice. We are coming out with a smaller Silly Rabbit within the next few weeks called the Silly Bunny. Keep an eye out for it!!!!

I was just about to buy some Silly Rabbit swimbaits from LBF.com when I saw this thread. Ended up buying them from buyfishingstuff.com. Had them at a better price too. If Basstrix doesn't get on the ball and start producing more Paddle tails, Poor Boys is gonna get a lot of business. They don't have all the colors and sizes of Basstrix though. Sorry for the hijack. Hope you all get your CC problems sorted out.

The bright side is that a subscription to Playboy online is easier to explain to the wife than a subscription to a gay porn website!

Let me know what colors you guys are looking for and I will see what we can do about making them. We have added two more colors - halogram and blue gill - and if enough of you guys ask for a certain color, we are not opposed to making it.

Hi Kim, I went out to yer website, http://www.poorboysbaits.com/, to view the products you have on line, but none of the links on the left are working for me. Is this the correct website or is there another location we can view the products you have available?

I do believe that is the correct website Cooch...

The site is trying to installed an unsigned active X control from an unknown publisher on yer web browser.

So basically your PC is protecting you by not allowing it to happen. And belive me, this is a good thing.

The web developer musta gotten kicked in the head by a mule or somthing. In HTML Land, that is a seriously big no no. I'm going to send a PM to Kim explaining the problem. Hopefully she gets it and the site is back up soon.

Yes I can't believe some web designers use Microsoft products to design websites. Some can't be read by anyt Macintoshes and PCs using Firefox or Opera.

Funny a LandBigFish FRAUD string. I also bought some baits off this site for the first time prior to going on vacation. Upon my return home, I find out my bank has cancelled the card I used for the purchase ( to my embarassment at a restaurant ) because of "unusual activity". That activity was the attempted $600 purchase of computer equipment at an Alabama Staples store with a North Carolina shipping address.

Thanks guys for helping to nail this problem down. Walton's, the Hook, Tackle Warehouse, Fisherman's Warehouse, you get the idea.........

At this point, I think I'll just stay away from all this all together! Mules, controlling unknown publishers and CC fraud, and I thought AOL was bad! And people question me about being old fashioned and not buying stuff or bankin on line! Not Norton or even PCI compliancy can we be fully protected on the Internet. There will always be some rat bastard forever searching ta find a way ta steal from me!

I apologize for the inconvenience. Some people do have trouble with navigating around the web site and I am personally unable to add or change anything on it either. I am in the process of having a new web site designed and will hopefully be operational within the next month. I know you guys are hesitant to order from Land Big Fish but they do carry all of our products in all our colors and if you are unable to view the Poor Boy's web site can go there to see our products until we get our new site finished. The new items aren't on our web site anyway since I can't edit it (gotta love computers!!! ). If you would like a brochure feel free to contact me and I will be happy to send you one too!!!

I think I may have a solution to not being able to view the poorboy site correctly. (should be the same for firefox, netscape, and IE)First.. If someone would be so kind as to try to go to the main poorboy website @

http://www.poorboysbaits.com/

If you are unable to see the site correctly (you cannot see the navagatioon button on the left). Should look like this screen:

Image

If the navagation buttons do not look like that... Try installing the latest Java plug in for your web browser @

http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp

And then try the poorboy website again.

If that fixes the issue.. Please post that back in this thread.

Thank you,

Hello everyone, my name is Jeff Cady, owner at LandBigFish.com. I'd like to offer our deepest apologies to anyone who may of been affected from this matter. Rest assured, this was not an employee at LBF, but someone overseas performing server hi-jacking, so it seems. Our hosting company can not confirm nor deny anything from the server logs, but I do agree the coincidences are overwhelming. Once we have learned about this matter, we have updated all systems with bulletproof username/passwords, and added even more security measures. The site is extremely safe to shop. But if you are still uncomfortable with ordering online, please call us toll free.

I do recommend anyone who has purchased from us in July or August to call their card companies and research their bill to make sure no unauthorized activity has occurred. It's better to safe than sorry.

I myself purchase online weekly, and have had two cards victimized by similar circumstances in the past. It is no fun calling your cards to straighten the mess out, but all of them will make it straight for you. So again, if we are the reason for any of this, please accept our sincere apologies.

If anyone would like to contact me, I'd be happy to chat, please drop me an email at jcady@landbigfish.com

In Closing, we are on top of the issue, and researching further, but have made the changes necessary to ensure this does not happen again. The site is very safe to shop! Through all of this, we appreciate your support and understanding. Thanks, Jeff

Credit Card Fraud is reality of the world - both online and when you use in a local store and a bad employee steals your info off your card. Luckily you are not responsible for these charges - but it does take time and a real pain to get it figured out. I own BASSTACKLEDEPOT.COM AND USACPROSHOP.COM and we process in the thousands of orders each month and one of my jobs is in the credit card fraud arena. We have seen these sites grow leaps and bounds and have had some attempts of fraudulent charges on many occasions, we even shipped a few. But, once you input in the safe guards available its a pretty small issue. Heck, a few months ago I had over 200 attempts with stolen cards in one night - that were all caught by security. We have of course since then installed more filters and several different levels of authorizations and I can now confidently say that I may see 1-2 attempts out of hundreds every few days. So the bottom line is for any site you are visiting most are secure. The most important safeguard is to read your credit card statement. 95% percent of sites are not going to risk losing the ability to run credit cards online and be black-listed by authorization clearance houses for a few bucks. In the end the only person who stands to loose is the retailer, as he may have shipped the product and he does not have recourse or the ability to dispute anything. So in all reality don't sweat it , its not that big of a problem.

Good Fishing
Mark Mendez :)

P.S. - My post has nothing to do with identity theft - that's a whole different enchilada...... :)

Yeah Mark, that is what seems to have happened with LandBigFish..It seems that somehow the perps have figured an easy way to gain shoppers info and then use it somewhere else..You are correct in stating most sites take care trying to ensure this type of crime does not happen..Unfortunately there are people that spend a lot of their time trying to break into these systems and utilizing the information they get..

One more note on Mark's message... Those attempts at fraudulent charges on our site were people trying to USE stolen credit cards... not people trying to STEAL credit cards. Either way is a bad scenario, but two different animals!

Good to see LandBigFish.com working hard at getting it resolved. Being the webmaster for our sites I can attest to the difficulty and and headaches it takes to get it all worked out.. between hosting companies, credit card transaction companies, secure socket layers and a few other details... getting them all aligned is a HUGE headache, but once you get them all lined up its pretty solid and secure. BUT NO MATTER HOW HARD LandBigFish.com, TackleWarehouse.com, us (BassTackleDepot.com and USACProshop.com) or any other web company works on securtiy there are always those A-HOLES out there working just as hard or harder to break into it! Luckily for everyone, as Mark said - the credit card company will straighten it out (with a little work from you)! So order up from whereever you choose but, keep a keen eye on your statement and account balances!

I know I haven't paid enough attention to my statements... BUT I WILL NOW!
