Lake Chabot Camping

Post by Sean Graf »

I was thinking of taking the family camping and the only campsites that are available on the dates we want to go are at Chabot. Has anyone ever camped there? I'm wanting to know if this is a good place to take a family camping.

Thanks in advance,

Sean,
It's been 10 years since I camped there, it was a nice place, warm in the day and cool at night. You can't swim in the lake like you can at Del Valle. Lot's of hiking and trails. Hike along redwood creek and check out one of the few true native species trout and I believe the only true native rainbow trout in the state. You get there by taking Redwood Road in Oakland.

Sean I haven't camped there, but I go to Chabot Regional Park alot. Dog walks, bike rides, fishing, etc. It is a nice place, boat rentals, can be good fishing, planted trout in the winter, now probably some bass and catfish. There is a paved trail around the south and west part of the lake and non paved hiking trails on the north to make a big loop. It has good mountain bike trails and you can do the "Chabot Loop" on your mountain bike if you are up to it.

The campgrounds are not on the water, it is a quick drive, but a pretty good hike down to the water and to the boat rental place at the marina. They rent rowboats and rowboats with electric trolling motors, as well as bigger electric boats with a shade canopy but you aren't allowed to fish from them. You can rent a rowboat and bring your own transom trolling motor and battery or you can bring your own canoe or kayak, but no inflatable boats allowed. Shore fishing is allowed and there are fishing docks around the lake to use. No big fast boats.

You'd be really close to Redwood Regional Park just north of the Chabot, there are some great hiking trails among the redwoods there and a kids play area (swing sets etc.) There are a couple of public golf courses nearby.

Safe? Clean? Quiet? (except for the Chabot Gun range) I think so but like I said I live close so I never camp there.

"I'm going out to fish," Simon Peter told them, and they said, "We'll go with you." So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.

"OK guys, Who brought the banana?"
