Ladds Marina

Post by laddsmarina »

Hello,

My name is Patty Bonnifield, current owner/operator of Ladds Marina. I see many posts regarding Ladds and would love to enlighten you. Ladds Marina was established by George Ladd just after WW 2. approx. 1947. He was a boat builder of kit boats and eventually houseboats. He moved his business to it's present location in Buckley Cove in the late 40's or early 50's. I believe Ladds was the first business in Buckley Cove. George then sold the business to Allen Bonnifield in the late 60's. The launch area was built afterwards, Riverpoint Landing then known as Stephens Marine was built by one of the Stephens brothers who was also a partner in Stephens Marine now known as 5 Star Marine. Stephens Marine built the famous and expensive Stephens Yachts. The park was put in and named Emile Seifert Park after the head of Parks and Recreation for the City of Stockton. The high school kids used to come to the end of the road called Brookside Road to PARTY all weekend long. Thus this area came to be known as Ladds. Even people today call the levee road North of the slough, behind Ladds and Riverpoint, Ladds. Ladds Marina is a repair facility of vessels up to 60 ft. X 16 W. We do the following repairs, dry rot, gel coat, fiberglass, blister repair, bottom painting, etc. We have a small store and sell frozen bait, worms, all sorts of fishing tackle and poles. We have boat safety items, flotation, fire extinquishers, flags, etc. We sell the best coffee, muffins and bagels, cold drinks and friendly service. I hope this answers the mystery of Buckley Cove aka Ladds.

Thank you Patty, very interesting info. Ive been launching their since the late 80's since I travel from the middle of the valley,Merced. Ive see great changes since the first time using the launch area, but all this time never new you had a store selling tackle and food. I guess the excitement of getting to my first fishing spot has had my blinders on, not noticing what you had to offer. Good to know. What are the hours that the store is open?
Again, thank-you for the interesting info.

Thanks for the post.
I was the one also looking for books on the Delta.
I think the place has a lot of excellent history, your story adds a little more.

Thanks Again,
Rene

I think you may be confusing the City of Stockton's municipal ramp with the private business known as Ladd's. Everyone seems to use the name Ladd's when they're actually referring to the marina at Buckley Cove Park. Buckley Cove Marina is the facility with multiple ramps between Ladd's and River Point Landing.
