Just finished my deck extension

Post by Gator »

Turned out awesome. Many thanks to GW for the two old lids I used to build the base with. A little epoxy, some framework, some water seal, and a whole lot of sanding is all it took.

The carpet color is a little lighter but it is close enough. It's gonna get a lot of use!!

Now, a question for everyone, any ideas on how to secure it where it is still removable (without drilling into the boat)?

I second the velcro strips, just be sure to put enough around the entie area otherwise it could possibly fly off causing injury or damage.

It looks great BTW, I had no idea you could do something like that!!

Hey Gator -
I made one that looked identical to yours for my old basscat... While I waited 6 months to receive the one I ordered from Mossdale. Another topic....

Back on topic.... I didn't secure it down and guess what ---- I was running across Clear lake at 60 mph... and it flew off and cracked me upside the head! Luckily... I have a hard head and it didn't knock me out... but, it sure was a bit scary!

I would definitely drill holes! you could get away with just 2 holes... I doubt Velcro will be strong enough to hold it down in serious conditions.... and it's much to dangerous to not have it very secure.

Thanks for the input guys. I may look into a couple of small mounting bolts, just to insure that it does not move.

Thanks Sean - I used to be an installation manager for Circuit City, so I have a lot of experience building custom speaker enclosures - wood, fiberglass and carpet.

30 1/2 inches front to back, 27 3/8" wide closer to the bow, 30 3/8" wide closer to the consoles.

Now that I have done it, wouldn't be too hard to replicate. Have to use marine grade plywood though, don't have any more deck material to use

You are correct Kurt - Brown wadda with a Yamamoto purple grub - if you also noticed there is a black wadda sitting right next to it ( you can't see the blue zoom trailer on that one!)

I have seen people use the Jeep hood Catch to hold them down for easy removal

ay Gator one thing to think about is using a 24"-36" piano hinge mounted on the bow side for easy flip up storage. You can also mount some cheap plastic office dividers in there if you need a place for your plano boxes(this is where the velcro is handy) alot better than spending the big money Ranger wants for their tackle dividers.

If your deck lid sits on L angles at the sides, you could probably find flush mount latches the would engage under the angle at a marine supply, salt water. I've found them at West Marine for flush access doors in hardwood floors.
Ranger might make them for your boat.
I bet if you put one on each side, it would never move. You could probably get away with just one latch on one side, and some kind of finger on the other. Open the latch, lift from that side, and it should come out.

Whatever it is sitting on, clear silicon, set the deck back onto it, let sit overnight, almost un-removable, no holes, and if you ever have to replace it, new carpet etc, the silicon will clean off of whatever you put it on .............try it !! The stuff holds in hurricane winds once dried !!
