Gamblers held their Tournament of Champions at Lake New Melones. Fishing was tough to say the least with three limits on Saturday and only two on Sunday. However, Joseph Silva was able to find the key to unlock the suspended fish cruising at the depths.

Joseph Silva had two limits with the overall big fish for the event. He had 89.50” on day one and day two 87.00” for a total of 173.50” to beat second place by a massive 46.75”. Silva used the mid strolling technique to catch his fish during the event.

“I launched out of Glory Hole and headed to the stepper walls across the lake.” announced Silva, “I did not find any fish there so I started to cover water in search for some schooling bass.”

“I found some fish in a cut but they were not chasing bait, they were just schooled up.” stated Silva, “I had to use a 3/8-ounce jig head because the fish were in 50 feet of water.”

“I was able to get one per school because they would get wise to me catching fish out of the school.” expressed Silva, “I had to make the first and second cast count to catch the fish.”

“Day-two my game plan was to catch those fish out of the schools that I had found the day before.” declared Silva, “The schools had from 8 to 30 fish per school.”

“I did change up my lure by adding a spunk shad in the white color from Missile Baits.” asserted Silva, “I would throw the lure over their heads and they would react but not take the lure. I had to cast the lure and let it drop over the top of the schoolers and then rip the lure back towards me to get them to bite.”

“I was fishing in 50 feet of water with the casting jig that weighted ½ ounce paired with the spunk shad lure.” he said.

Joseph Silva thanked James for hosting such great events this year and my girlfriend and family for all their support all year long.

Able Patino was runner up with a total of 126.75”. On day one, he had 44.25” and his day two was 82.50”. Patino was the only angler that gave Silva a run for his money. Patino used the drop shot rig in 10 to 30 feet deep on day one and then on day two, he his lay downs on his drop shot rig but didn’t hook up. He changed up to chasing schoolers offshore with a jig head minnow. Patino ended up taking the Angler of the Year for the Gamblers series.

“Day one, I caught my fish on the drop shot rig in lay down trees along the shoreline.” asserted Patino, “I only caught three fish all day long.”

“Day two, I started shallow but never got a bite in the lay down trees.” stated Patino, “I changed up and started looking for schoolers chasing bait offshore.”

“I went through a bunch of baits but only caught fish on the jig head minnow.” conveyed Patino, “I did catch a few on the tail spin.”

“On day two, between 11 AM and 3 PM I caught around 15 keepers.” indicated Patino, “I caught everything on the jig head minnow.”

Greg Blanchard placed third with a total of 98.75” His day one was 66.50” and his day two was 23.25”. Blanchard’s fished locations he had in the past. His first fish was on a crankbait. He had found that the offshore bite was the best.

“I don’t have the forward-facing units so I felt I was at a disadvantage compared to the other anglers that use the newest electronic units.” Blanchard declared, “After catching the two fish on a crankbait, I was able to catch one on a jig and another on an A-Rig.”

“I caught 6 fish total for a third-place finish.” stated Blanchard, “Four fish for the day one and two fish for the second day.”

“Patino and I were tied coming into the final day of the event for Angler of the Year (AOY) and he was able to catch 5 fish on day two for the AOY title.”

“My hats off to Abel Patino for winning the AOY tile for the year.” he said,

Blanchard thanked Yak-a-Bass for the Gamblers Series this year and all the hard work that James and Bill did all year long. “I really liked the Gamblers series because of the no practice 30 days out. It brings out the best angler that can figure out what the fish are doing.” he said. Also, The Crew that we all hang out with during these events. The tough days of fishing make the event much more happier being with the Crew. “I will be fishing the Gamblers event next year for sure.” he said.
