Johnny morris combo?

Post by hogbeastbassin »

As some of you know, Bass Pro Shops is selling Johnny Morris signature series combos on sale for a pretty good price ($224.98 as compared to 299.98 ). I was interested in getting this combo for smaller (1/2 to 1 oz) swimbaits:
REEL:
JMX10HLC
6.4:1

ROD:
JMS710H
1/2-4 OZ lures
7'10"
Heavy with extra fast tip action

What I have now was a recommended beginner swimbait combo of an okuma big bait 7'11" extra heavy rod and 5.2:1 shimano corvalus reel. Now I got the heaviest rod so tossing huge swimbaits is not a problem(rated 2 to 10oz), but was told not to use rods that are stiff all the way threw. Was wondering if the johnny combo would do the trick as far as better hookups with the smaller swimbaits as I pour 4" and 6" inch hand pours. Ive read that stiff rods are better for soft baits, and fast tip heavy action rods were better for hard swimbaits. Well please let me know your experiences and your opinion on this rod and reel combo.

I was also considering other actions and reels (as a bunch are on sale) for other bait applications especially crankbaits and possibly a spinnerbait combo

I've only played with the rods in the store ... never owned one of the rods nor this reel. But ... if you must, it's an ok rod. I don't know about the durability of the reels. But I do worry about replacement part and repairs on the reel in the long run though.

If I were you, I'd go get one of the Dobyns Mike Long swimbait rods currently on sale for $140 and find a lightly used Shimano Curado 200D on the used market for ~$100 ... in the long run, you'd probably be happier with this combo.

Their rods look and feel top notch. I had a Johnny Morris baitcaster (chrome 07 model) and really liked it. I have a Rick Clunn baitcaster right now and I like it almost as much as my Shimanos. I've used it hardcore for about 2 years with 0 problems. The new higher end BPS reels (extreme and above) are great and I wouldnt worry about buying one. The only thing I could see them improve on is the drag, which is good but not as nice as the Shimano Dartanium.

Ok,

Im a huge fan of the BPS rods and reels, I own 3 Johnny Morris JMP10H reels and 1 of the Johnny Morris Elite series reels. I also own variouse rods including the Elite Series Rod and several others. I can tell you from personal exsperience that they are great. I have yet to have any problems with any of thier stuff. (Knock on wood). I also know 1st hand that if you have a problem with any of your reels you can take it back to BPS and they will either fix it or give you store credit. My brother took an older 2 or 3 years reel back to them to get fixed, and they gave him $75 store credit, it was a JM reel. The Elite Series rods have the titanium guides and are super sensative and strong. I own other reels and rods and hands down the JM series of rods n reels are dam good gear.

I own about six JM reels. Ive owned em for about 2 years and love them! I pretty much beat them up and do a lot of fishing. Just keep them clean and you wont have any problems.
