Jig rod help

Post by Greg_Cornish »

My first "standard jig" fish with Yamamoto Twin Tail trailer out of 2.5 to 4 feet of water by Lakeport. I missed a bunch of jig fish because I'm having trouble finding the right rod. I doesn't have to be expensive. I can't grip with my hands so I need a stiff spinning rod with a steelhead handle - something long enough to stick under my armpit. Then I can wedge it between my thumb and firefinger and jerk hard enough, I'd like the length to be 6 1/2 ft to 7 ft between the reel and the tip. Any ideas would be appreciated. Yes I froze my arse off, but not when I was getting bites.

Greg if the handle length is the big issue could you extend it with a piece of PVC pipe or similar slipped over the handle ?

would this work

If you don't want to spend a ton of money, check out some of the Shimano Clarus series. They have longer handles and make good heavier action spinning rods. Loomis make good rods too, if you can afford'em. You can also buy a rod with the action you like and have the butt section extended by a rod builder. Let me know if you want to go that route (PM or email is best)... it's a fairly easy customization and pretty cheap to do.

That looks like a great setup however i'd still need to grasp it. Because i can't grasp i need to put my hand under it. I've been cutting the cork of and end drilling dowels to glue over but it seems to deaden the feel of the bite. I was going to try to find something stock if I could. I liked the South bend rods, but they are 2 piece and have ceramic eyes that wear my braid down very fast. They are great for setting hooks through plastic and if they stayed together might work for jigs, but I want to upgrade.

Strange, they make the spinning rods medium lite to medium and the same casting rods medium light to heavy. I think a medium heavy would be ideal but i can't use a casting reel. I wonder if I could get their blanks for a casting rod. If i modified the casting rod with different eyes, the internal spline is on the wrong side of the rod from what I'm told. If I started with a blank it wouldn't matter

I dont remember which company makes it but there is a fairly stout rod that has an extra long handle for a new style of spoon fishing basicaly you tuck the rod under your armpit and use body movements to move the spoon maybe this rod is the right one for you?

Hey Greg,
You might consider having a custom rod builder make you a spinning rod on a 7'+ MH casting blank, that would be the best thing I can think of. You would have plenty of length for a long rear grip and a fair amount of stick out front for good hooksets. Then you would not be relegated to whippy spinning rod that really have no business rigged up with a flipping jig.

Its really along the same lines as my idea for a heavy action casting blank made up as a spinning rod to cast frogs, seems like it would be a whole lot easier to skip'em under stuff without the fear of backlashes!

Good luck and nice jig fish!

Anyone tell me why spinning rods are always lighter in strength?

Thank you guys for your help. I bookmarkd all links for future reference. I stopped at Tackle It today and George sold me a Shimano CSS-70H Heavy Extra Fast for $59 - lifetime warrenty. I like the feel. The handle is about 3 to 4 inches to short, but Bob Higgins from Limit Out and George at Tackle It, gave me some broken rod handles I think I can cut and stick inside for extensions and glue them in place.

I'll do it this weekend and let you know how I like it. What does the fast - extra fast mean?

Some years a go I saw a seminar at one of the expo's and the guy was using a spinning rod flipping stick.. I beleive it was made by Lamiglas but I haven't seen them for a while. You may be able to do a little hunting around and find one. If not,, you could always try having a custom spin rod built on flip stick blank....

I think I have one of those. It was given to me by Chef. The handle is a tad short but usuable. I plan on lengthening it too. I use that exclusively for my goto bait the Senko. It upped my catching percentage fron about 65% to 95% on Senkos. I'm sure it would work great for a jig rod, however, I cant tie my own lines because of my hands and I like to intrude on my fishing buddies time as little as possible. I keep them mighty busy with tangles, backlashes, unhooking fish etc etc. So I try to be as rigged up as possible when we go out. Thus I need a jig rod.

Dude, thanks for that link. I now understand what slow to extra fast action means. I think I got the right rod. I want to stick em quick with little give. The extra fast seems to be the one.

I believe you are thinking of the Freestyle Jigging Rod, Bass Pro Shops sells them in their Extreme XPS Series. Looks like they are only in baitcaster style though. (See pages 160-161 of the 2007 Fishing Master Catalog) Hope this helps
