Wow is all I have to say! That thing is HUGE! Congratulations to the nameless angler. I'm excited to see what transpires from all of this....and if it IS true, it sounds like the record is going to a pretty deserving angler...

Where you at on this one Hollywood? Give us the inside scoop!

Smells fishy to me. Lake Biwa with no history of producing large fish kicks out a 22 lber? we'll see.

I saw that. What makes me skeptical is the lakes we see that have produced fish over 20 lbs have a history of producing large fish, not just a large fish, but many large fish. I know they stocked massive amounts of Florida bass in the lake, so it could be.

It definitely looks like a world record fish and a lot more credible than George Perry's fish that we do not have a picture of. But being so close to the record of 22 lb 4oz. I have a feeling that the IGFA will want to weight it again in their presence and by that time.......

Few lakes produce more than one 20+ bass, Castaic is the only lake I can think of at the moment. Dixon was the same fish caught more than once.
This catch needs to be validated and will be studied closely. It looks like it's real, the girth equals the length and calculates out close to the reported weight, no lead belly is apparent. How it was caught? appears to be legal tackle. Japan has been on the radar for potentail WR bass. I have a feeling this is legit.

I have seen a lot of this guy's reports. The picture looks just like one I saw posted almost a year ago. They catch some big fish there. They also have little regard for sportsmanship. When you have no problem with trespassing and poaching you would have no problem putting aside any rules of fair catch in obtaining a World Record.

That is a different bass from Japan folks. The Perry bass has no photo, the man and kid photo isn't Perry, he didn't smoke according to everyone who knew him.
The issue will be the weight is too close, needs to be 22.38 or 22 lbs 6 oz to replace the Perry bass, so should be list as co records.
It's early in the game to be calling this bass anyhting other than a potentail new world record, it needs to be validated first by the IGFA, not an easy task.

That shot WAS of the WR, held by a neighbor and his kid before teh Perry clan ate it. Look at it's size, a dead giveaway. There are no shots of Perry with though, true enough.

Lake Biwa has produced some huge fish. There was a 25-pounder caught in a net (they commercially net-fish there for ayu) just last year, and I know of a 19-pounder that was caught there a year or two ago.

Dan and I spent two weeks in Japan last summer visiting friends, and Dan fished Lake Biwa. It is an amazing fishery, with lots of big bass.

The first anyone has stated the photo was the Perry bass. Read Perry's own account of his catch and he stated it was raining and we didn't get back to town until after it was dark. We, Perry and his fishing partner, took the fish to the post office to get it weighed. The Perry clan must of waited until the next day, a sunny afternoon, to clean the bass.
Hopefully the Japanese bass will become a legit record.

Any body realize in the pictures the guy has two different shirts on? A long sleeve red one and a off color pinkish short sleeve at least that is what I noticed. Either way it is a huge fish and if it is true hopefully he will get the credit he is do.

It's amazing that the oldest record on the books is the LMB Perry record lasting 77 years and the news of it being broken has had so little discussion.
Photo's of some identified man and boy were posted by some die hard hopeful that a picture of the Perry exists.
Back in 1932 when Perry was a 20 year old farmer trying to exist, went fishing late one afternoon with a friend to catch dinner. Back in the depression few people owned a camera or had film if they did. Taking a picture late afternoon during a rain, when the bass was weighed would have required a flash.
The Perry bass was measured for length and girth, imagine someone thought to measure the girth! who on this site knows the girth measurements of the Weatley dottie bass? Yet back in '32 before records were kept for fresh water fish, IGFA didn't start until the '50's, Perry measured the length and girth at 32" long and 28 1/2" girth. Amazing! or maybe he filled out the contest blanks and guesed about length, girth and ...weight.
The new pending world record is 29.4" long, no girth has been posted to date, the weight is 22.531 lbs.
My PB is 28.5" long, 28" girth and weighed 19.3 lbs.
The Kurita bass looks like it's 22.31 lbs. and should be the new world record and more than likely will be. As I have stated earlier; Japan isn't done setting records, just starting.
Too bad this bass is a bait fish, lost a lot of yen on that choice.

Here's some video footage of the beast for those who are interested: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXOyXArL9rw

And a more recent write-up about the fish from B.A.S.S. :

Seventy-seven years and counting. That's how long George Perry has sat atop the record books in the largemouth bass category, but he may be sharing his perch if a recently caught Japanese bass is as big as has been reported. The story comes out of Lake Biwa in the Shiga Prefecture of Japan. The bass reportedly weighs 10.12 kilograms or a little less than 22 pounds, 5 ounces and measured 73.5 centimeters (nearly 29 inches). No girth measurements are available at this time. Manabu Kurita, 32, is reportedly the fortunate angler. Early reports are that the fish was caught just before noon on July 2 on live bait (either a bluegill or a native fish similar to a bluegill). His rod was a Deps model (he is sponsored by the Japanese fishing tackle manufacturer), his reel was a Shimano Antares DC7 and his line was 25-pound-test Toray fluorocarbon. A Japanese television clip featuring Kurita and his catch recently surfaced on YouTube.com. At the time of the video, the fish was alive, but it is now reportedly dead and frozen. In the video, Kurita says, "I knew it was big fish, but I didn't think it was this big. I did not know if it was a new world record or not."
Kurita has experience with big bass. Last year he reportedly caught an 18 1/2-pound largemouth from Biwa on a large swimbait.

The video also notes that Kurita has been fishing for 18 years and will submit an application for world record recognition to the International Game Fish Association. If Kurita's catch holds up, it would be the biggest legally caught certified largemouth in history (Perry's fish weighed 22-4) ... and a tie with Perry's catch as the IGFA's all-tackle world record. A tie? That's right. According to IGFA regulations for record fish weighing less than 25 pounds (such as all of the black bass subspecies), the replacement (record applicant) must weigh at least two ounces more than the existing record. The Japanese fish that is subject of such interest and inquiry today outweighs Perry's fish by less than an ounce. "A catch which matches the weight of an existing record or exceeds the weight by less than the amount required to defeat the record will be considered a tie," according to the IGFA. Lake Biwa is the largest lake in Japan, covering some 259 square miles, and is said to be one of the oldest lakes in the world. It is surrounded by mountains and renowned for its beauty and deep (more than 300 feet), crystal clear waters. Biwa and its bass population have been in the news in recent years as Japanese officials work to ban and eliminate invasive (nonnative) species from the lake. In fact, the Lake Biwa Museum restaurant offers black bass as a menu item. The previous Japanese bass record weighed 19.15 pounds and was caught by Kazuya Shimada from Lake Ikehara on April 22, 2003, on a swimbait.

If Im not mistaken that pic was found when one of Perrys relatives passed away. The pic was confirmed as legit by an investigative reporter. Not sure how long ago all this went down but it was that long ago, relatively speaking.

Exactly...I think of any live baits that the crawdad is the bait to catch the biggest bass. All my live bait double digits have been on 'dads and a bunch of nice 8-9#'s on waterdogs and mudsuckers in the days back.

Wish we could get a hold of the crusties again and catch bigguns again!
