How to rig 10" worm?

Post by ScottyJ »

Whats the best way to rig a 10" worm? I got some of the Maverick 10" bass busters and want to know whats a good set-up as far as type/size of hook and how you all are rigging those monsters. Thanks!

On a hook!

Couldn't resist, sorry.

Pretty much any way you want. T-rig, bubba drop, shakey... try different things with it and let the fishies tell you.

For 10 inch Powerworms Texas I just use a 4/0 offset round bend, or a a straight shank 4 or 5/0.

Bill Murphy used really small hooks on big worms with great results.

I think it really depends on your application, how you are fishing them.

IMHO most choose, or start talking about really big hooks that are not really needed.

Texas Rigged...No Doubt!
4/0 Gamakatsu EWG hook and either a 1/4 or 1/2 tungsten bullet weight depending on how deep yer fishing...

If you're gonna do the Bubba-Shot thing and are having trouble getting bit, try wacky rigging the worm on your Bubba rig.

10" worms are generally considered a "normal" length, 12" to 16" what I would classify a big worm.
How you rig a worm depends on where you plan to fish it; shallow heavy cover, then a lighter weight, pegged, fished on 14 to 17lb mono or fluoro, 4/0 to 6/0 worm hook, Texas style, and 3/16 oz weight, would be a good choice. Check the throat of the hook can handle the worm diameter by first rigging , then slide the nose of the worm and the mid section that is on the hook down into the hook bend. You should have 50% of the hook gap free of plastic,if not; use a wider gap hook or side skin hook the worm.
Deeper clearer water; then you may need to down size the line to 10 to 12 lb fluoro, use a nose hooked Gamakatsu 2/0 wide gap weedless finesse hook, glass bead pegged about 8" above the hook and black brass 3/16 or tungsten weight. You fish this rig very slowly with a straight tail style worm; drag about 12" rest, shake, drag type of retrieve.
Up size the line to 20 lb mono for night or dirty water. Good luck.

For my big worm hook up, I roll 10.5 xcite worm 17lb fluoro. 11/0 ownwer hook, bead and tru-tungston worm weight. that what I got with the fish in my sig.
