How many Rods for the Delta?
First off I know i have a lot of question, so thank you to all that have helped out in the past
How many rods do you guys have set up this time of year when you go out on the delta? What do you have set up on each?
If you can be specific that would be great. What kind of line (floro/braid etc.) What size rod and gear ratio of the reel and what kind of lure?
I'm trying to slowly build up my arsenal. Right now I have 5 rods specifically set up to fish the delta. I know I need at least a couple more probably but would like some imput.
1. 7'11 st. croix big gulp with a revo stx 6:4 for punching 65 pound braid
2. 7' 3' Dobyns 736 for frogs, stx 7:0 65 pound braid
3. 7' lamiglas certified pro 704, revo sx 6:4 for crankbaits 65 pound braid
4. Johnny Morris elite rod and reel its a 4 power rod 20 pound floro to throw spinnerbaits and the like.
5. g-loomis 956 with a calcutta 400b for big swimbaits
I know i need another rod that I can use just for flippin and pitching, but are these rods set up correctly for the right stuff and what else do I have to have.

Re: How many Rods for the Delta?
I would put 10-14 lb flouro on the cranking outfit.
You need a jig set-up but the bite is here and nowhere right now.
Anything for wacky and t-rigs? What about drop-shotting?
I would add the jig rod but that would be it for me. Don't know that you HAVE to have that on now though. I'm pretty hardcore about jigging so I ALWAYS have one with me.

65 pound braid for crankbaits?? use either mono or flouro in 12-14 pound. if your talkin about lipless 30 pound braid is good. 1 is good. 2 is good. id change 3 but its what you have confidence in. 4 is good. and 5 is good. id add a flipping rod to the aresenal. get a 7'6 MH to H and 65 pound braid or 20 pound flouro. Id also get a senko rod 7 ft MH with a 6:3 or 7:1 is good. and topwater should be getting better too during the fall. 7 ft MH for buzzbaits and spooks.birdi23nls wrote:First off I know i have a lot of question, so thank you to all that have helped out in the past

Re: How many Rods for the Delta?
Im usually in the 8-12 rod range when fun fishing or prefishing. I like 3-4 7ft MH rods for the delta at all times. The punchin rod always stays in the boat and is not counted. Braid is for frogs, punching and some top water, everything else gets floro or Big Game.
Fishing should be fun.
Re: How many Rods for the Delta?
Q: How many rods...
A: 3 -- Jig rod, Buzzbait rod and something for punching mats, tullies or heavy cover w/ a 1oz to 1.5oz tungsten weigh. I end up using 17lb P-line 100% fluorocarbon on all 3 w/ a 6:1 reel or faster on all rods.
Jig I'm usually throwing a 1/2 oz arkie style head with your color of choice based on the water clarity. Cooch's wadda jig is usually the first choice and the library has plenty of articles as to trailers, etc. Check them out.
Buzzbait I'm usually throwing a double wing black buzzbait in the am, then if the sky is blue I'll switch to a white double wing buzzbait in the afternoon & add a trailer hook. D&M Custom Baits has some really nice buzzbaits that I'd recommend checking out.
Punching I prefer to throw a 5" flipping tube in black/blue and use a bobber stopper to keep the bait compact. Throw this in and around the nastiest stuff you can find especially in water that everyone else was throwing a frog around. My personal favorite would be the black/blue Strike King Denny Brauer flipping tubes. You can use whatever you like here, but I prefer this setup over some of the other punching baits.
With those 3 baits you can concentrate the entire day on a big bite and do well. You may not catch 30+ fish during the day, but the fish you do catch on them will be much better size.

Re: How many Rods for the Delta?
yes i have the lamiglas set up for lipless crankbaits...i saw the trubass video with kent brown i think and he recommended braid for those. i kinda figured smaller diameter braid would be better but had the 65 lb and went with it. am i cool to throw speed traps and stuff on that if i put a floro leader or should it be a complete different set up?Delta is beast wrote:65 pound braid for crankbaits?? use either mono or flouro in 12-14 pound. if your talkin about lipless 30 pound braid is good. 1 is good. 2 is good. id change 3 but its what you have confidence in. 4 is good. and 5 is good. id add a flipping rod to the aresenal. get a 7'6 MH to H and 65 pound braid or 20 pound flouro. i've found that i love flipping and pitching since i just recently start fishing the delta and have been using the dobyns 736 for this since the frog bite has sucked for me pretty much but my next purchase is going to be a rod and reel that is ideal for just this application. is there one rod that you guys think is perfect for pitching/flipping on the delta.
If you could have any one flipping/pitching rod and money was not a factor...what would it be?

i do have another rod with a jig or a senko on it but i don't like it and im selling it to my uncle whenever we go fishing together next.L Dub wrote:I would put 10-14 lb flouro on the cranking outfit.

i also have a dobyns extreme gen 701 i use for dropshotting lakes but i kina thought that was to light for the delta.
I have other rods on the boat, but they are rigged for fishing lakes and really don't want to have to put new line and stuff each time I go to a different location.

Re: How many Rods for the Delta?
well it depends about the money. i would personally go with a new set up if money is not a problem but if it is instead of the flourocarbon leader id use a mono leader because of the stretch mono has you wont pull it out of the fishes mouth

Re: How many Rods for the Delta?
Crank baits-10-12 lb Floro
Senkos-12-15-Flor
Jigs-20lb Floro
Swimbaits-20 lb mono or Floro
Frogs-65lb Braid
Punching-65 lb Braid
DS-your option...
Lipless-20lb braid
Using 65 lb braid on your crank baits will affect their diving depths and action. As a rule go with what you feel is the lightest line you can safely use in the area you are fishing.

Re: How many Rods for the Delta?
The bait is moving very fast, and when I am using braid for crankin and rippin rattle traps its a reaction strike plain and simple, the line size may affect the action of the bait, but I dont think a leader is necessary on the delta when fishing the grass. On lakes where there is more clarity, I think the fish are more line shy, but onlybecause they have more time to scrutinize the bait. The river its running, stuck in the grass, pop fall fish on.birdi23nls wrote:on the lipless lamiglas rod,...will the fish be leader shy with the heavier 65 lb braid? should i by 30 lb?Delta is beast wrote:well it depends about the money. i would personally go with a new set up if money is not a problem but if it is instead of the flourocarbon leader id use a mono leader because of the stretch mono has you wont pull it out of the fishes mouth
The whole point for me to use braid on cranks and lipless baits while fishing around grass is for the line to help cut away the grass, one losses that quality when running a leader.

Re: How many Rods for the Delta?
I think the 65lb braid may kill some of the vibration on the lipless baits. 30 is very cool. I use 30lb to pitch. The only thing i do is keep my leader atleast 5' and I bring FC leader material on all outings. I always have 12 - 25 on the boat.
this keeps my options open

Re: How many Rods for the Delta?
ya ive been using the frog rod for that. I am getting ready to buy the pitching/flipping rod. Either a dobyns 764, dobyns 765, or Kistler II LTX Cast Rods 7'6" Heavy or the same rod in the cheaper model. I'm trying to make up my mind before the sale at btd ends.aNNieNsaLTIE wrote:no pitching rod? I always need a pitching rod for my jigs and senkos...
