How many rods is enough

Post by Bill kizer »

Since I'm now land bound, pissed off, waiting for my appointment date, emptying out the boat, and bored. I had a chance to count the number of rods I carry.

Question, how many is too many?

How many set ups do most of you carry?

Bill,
As a non-boater I OWN 10 set ups. I bring them to every tournament, talk with the boater and ask what he is going to be doing. I then narrow down the amount of rods I bring on the boat to about 5 or 6. If you are going to be walking the banks I usually will bring about 4 or 5. But you can NEVER have to many set ups!!

so your going to be fishing from foot... carry as many rods as you can while still being able to cast ONE... i laugh my butt off watching these knuckle heads with a tackle store on their backs and a rod rack with 10 rods walking the perc ponds... ARE YOU SERIOUS... bring one rod and what ever your going to throw make sure it fits in your pocket or a small pack... you want to have fun and not spend all your time thinking about all the CRAP your walking arround with....

Bill;
Realisticly (spell check that)........4 rods should always be sufficiant enough to get the job done............seriously............was have a headache with twisted rods and line all day, when you can spend time having your line in the water wherethe fish are. I mean as a boater for 20 plus years, I myself never have more than 2 on deck . Kicked one over board years ago so that cured me.

just my .02 worth

I own about 25 and I still need more! You can never have enough. Some guys have their cars, some guys have their bikes and buggies, I have fishin' gear. But as a non boater, I bring a good chunk of what I think I'll need and then narrow it down to the bite and boater's fishing style. This sounds horrible, but at times when its really just a junk bite, I've had 8 or 9 on the boat. Usually 6 is the maximum for me as a non boater. And the reason I own so many rods is because the variety of waters I fish. The nice thing is people don't realize I bring maybe half or less on my own boat, and less than a quarter of it when I'm on someone elses. It gets easy to narrow down after a while. If I'm doing a tourney at Castic or Piru, do I need a flip stick and heavier tackle? Probably not. I'll replace the flip stick with a jig stick, and limit reaction bait setups to lighter rods with more versatility. Now, if I'm going to Clear Lake or the Delta, am I going to bring my light dropshot and darterhead outfits? Not likely, so one rod can do most my finesse applications if I need it to. The reality is, if you fish one type of waterbody, you don't need too much setup wise. A rod that does the job at Havasu or Mead will do just fine in most of the lake around here. I helped get rid of tangles by getting rod socks for my setups. I like the Rod Jackets you can get at most local shops. They are awesome, though if you want to spend less the typical rod sock with the reel loop like the BPS variety work ok. I also bought the rod bag from TW that was on sale a few months back. It works great. It is very handy for for shore fishing. Put the strap on your back and keep moving. Like Jason said, you can't have too many rods!

466 is the number I wish I had. If I were walking a bank, I would have one. A MH 6'6" imx, like a Kisler or Loomis or any other good rod. As a non-boater over the years that was my anything rod, spinner bait, topwater, worm or jig. They all can be fished on it..
I have 12 rods here and 10 in Fl. never can tell when that fishing bug might bite. :D

Well Bill,

I did not get to read the reason for your land locked situation, But i will shoot you a PM if are available to take a boat ride on the delta.

Now how many rods do i carry? I carry enough to make sure my set-ups go "hand in hand"

Do i flip w/ just a jig? no i flip with a jig and a senko.

Does Kermit go out solo, nope he takes a ride with a fluke

If i am out fishing fluke they are always backed up with a wacky rigged .....something...

My spook goes out with a fluke..

I hope you know what i mean...

So, spinnerbait, spook, rattle trap, wacky rigged something, pointer or staysee.. would be one day type set up for me on the boat.

Land wise... I like one rod but if you can stick a extrad rod in you back pack or something 2 works ok to.

Well Bill,
I'm now landbound as well (can't figure whether to sell the boat and start anew, or hold out for a new motor...)

Of course if we all had bottomless wallets, we would have hundreds of setups, but for most of us we try to keep the number within out means.

I think that 10-12 setups is pretty much all you need, simply because most stuff can handle about 10% of your baits. A dropshot rod isn't just a dropshot rod, its a shakeyhead rod, a darthead rod and a skipping rod. Does your jig rod only work with jigs, NO, you throw your texas rigged worms, sweet beavers and maybe your senkos on it.
Now I am in the process of building up my rod and reel collection (literally, as I plan to fish only rods that I have built). Right now I have three and am working on a fourth, those being a 7'2" "Lighter Jig Rod", a 7'1" Finesse casting rod and a 7'6" Crankbait rod, with a 6'6" Heavy jig rod on the way.

Find what works for you and go with that.

Getting confussed as to the answers and question...Bill are you asking how many rods is enough, or how many to take as a back seater, or how many to carry down the bank ???

I enjoyed reading all the responses.

My question arose when I pulled 15 fully set up rigs out of the boat. I was unaware that my wife was lurking in the shadows counting as I pulled them out.

She didn't really complane about the number. She was just courious if other anglers carry that many set ups each time they go out. She smiled as she drove off to go clothes shopping.

Whenever I start talking about getting another rod and/or reel, my wife asks, "What do yo need another rod for? Don't you have enough already? "

My resopnse is, "Would you send Tiger Woods out for a round of golf with nothing but a 9-iron and a putter?"

I perdy much now only take out 5 rods -- mabey another later in the year for line-siders as well.

But I do throw 2-3 extra reels in the bag with braid ...

- Two Powell 735's with #17 Trilene 100% for jigs (each in a different color)
- One Powell 705 with #20 Trilene 100% for Senko's or weighted Lizzards.
- One Lami 705r with #14 Sunline for cranks and blades.
- One Shimano Crucial CRC-66M that doubbles as a Rippin' stick and a DS rod with #15 floro

The other reels are #65 and #50 braid for frogs or smaller SB's with a fluro leader tied on to switch to.

If I do pack another -- It is the Shimano CRC-76MH for the Cracker or Punker with #80 braid.

Honestly -- Lately in the last month I have only been using one bait and rod 80% of the time.

I don't even chuck those big SB's anymore on the Okuma -- and DeltaLuke can get all the workout's he wants with it ........ to develop his shoulder/back/arm mussles.
You know, we always called each other goodfellas. Like, you'd say to somebody: "You're gonna like this guy; he's all right. He's a goodfella. He's one of us." You understand? We were goodfellas, wiseguys.

Hope u didn't get yours busted for that. I carry 6 on deck, 12 in the locker, 10 more in the garage, 4 extra reels. OOOHHH I shouldn't have counted. If ur asking about non boaters, my usual backseater shows up with 10-11 set ups and spends most of the day untangling his mess and then complains that I catch all the fish
