up to how many knots or mph is the wind fishable?

Post by aNNieNsaLTIE »

I am not Cooch or Rich. I do not have 101 places to hide. But I would like to know up to how many MPH is the wind fishable on the delta?

anyone use this site?

Looks like a good tool.

Stephen,

No level of wind is too much for me to fish in. I had one of my best tournament days ever in the very first Westernbass/100% Pro-am here when we had a southern wind blowing 55-65 mphs a few years back. Just yesterday, Dan and I ventured out for a little over an hour at lunch, with a very fierce North wind blowing 35-30, we caught 7 nice keepers in that period.

In both cases, I just got on a long rock wall bank, dropped that 109 lb trolling motor and go. Actually, turns out, it was the exact same bank both times, and we were nowhere near hiding from the wind! And I believe this is something a lot of anglers over look and miss out on. WHen it get's windy here, 99% of the anglers will run and hide, finding places out of the wind to fish. I, go to banks where the wind is blowing right on it. And in being able to do that, is only afforded by the fact I got that MG 109 on the front of my boat, and why Dan replaced his 84# with the same t-motor(Who's boat we fished in yesterday, Awesome addition to yer boat Dan!).

Cooch,
In this scenerio you're describing, is it always a case of then fishing reaction baits (something cranking and winding) regardless of the time of year, or perceived patterns?

The reason i ask is that the concept of "fishing in the wind" is quite understood; but actually doing it with a bait other than a spinnnerbait or crankbait is a gift that i just have no talent at.

whether its at the Delta, or on one of our windy lakes, i just cannot get the hang of managing the boat, casting a bait, and then focusing on my line to feel a bite.

How do you do it?

Boat size, 24V or 36V TM, and driver experience in wind are key points to concider. If you choose a launch ramp wisely up to about 35 MPH is not a problem. Remember to wear your life vest at all times during extreme wind. You blow off the boat and current may take you in one direction and the wind may take the boat in another faster than you can swim. Plan your day to stay away from Franks and the SJ River as they can get real rough. I also carry an anchor after blowing out a lower unit one day in 40 MPH wings and almost loosing my boat because the TM would not keep up with the win and we were blowing up on a rip/rap bank. Thank God for wake boarders!

Cooch has this one absolutely right. Not only do I have a MG 109 on the front, but I have the longer shaft as well. I look for the wind, especially, in the summer time, at all the different lakes I fish. Wind, and current, equal easy food for fish, and big fish aren't stupid. They like easy meals. As far as baits go, I throw everything I would always throw. If im on flip fish for example, I go flipping, and use the wind to help conceal my presence. I might point my nose into the wind, or alot of times, I use the tules as a bumper. I let the wind push the middle or back of the boat against each clump, and just slide my way along. What I'm saying is don't let the wind dictate where you are gonna fish, especially if you know the good ones are there. It may be harder to control the boat, but the wind will position the fish and actually help you eliminate water, plus the quality usually goes up as well.
