How many brakes do you put on your high end bait caster?

Post by Big Ed »

So I have always used a couple of brakes on my Shimano Chronarch MG50's. They are still phenomenal as they day I purchased them. I have never serviced these reels and they are incredible. I now have a few newer Shimano Core MG50's and after applying two brakes they don't feel right? I'm just curious if you all have a recipe for how many brakes is the sweet spot?

I always use the tension knob to get my cast just right.

Thanks: Big Ed!

I adjust my reels like you do.
I usually start with half out, and play around with them from there.

No breaks ever. Back everything off and use your thumb to control the spool

Same here. Once I get the brakes adjusted, then I mess around with the tension knob. Sometimes I forget to adjust the tension knob when I change baits, and then I get reminded when I have a bird's nest after my first cast with the new bait! :D

Dude take all your brakes off! Your thumb should be your only brake...

Wide open spool with only 2 brakes on all set ups unless they are my flipping setups then everything is off and wide open. I run all curado e7's and revo stx's. But I did just pick up a tatula type r and I'm experimenting with that still (magnets set to just under a quarter on and a wide open spool
