how do we define the CA Delta regions.?

Post by Backlash Black Belt »

I hear terms thrown around.

Central Delta, North Delta, South Delta. the "river".

is there a map the kinda defines the borders of each area? Frank's Tract is Central?

and River: Sacramento River? San J River?

I'm typically a Clearlake guy, and the Delta is relatively new for me. I am going to explore the Delta more on my kayak, and wanted to get my bearings straight.

thanks.

San Joaquin Delta.
hwy 12 Rio Vista bridge south 20 miles is approximate center zone, Hwy 12 north 20 miles approx northern zone, another 20 miles South of the center zone approximate southern zone.
about 60 miles north to south and 40 miles wide only takes a lifetime to learn this tidal delta.
The River rats can point you in the better kayak areas and better define the area.
Enjoy!

I lived on Bethel Island for years. San Joaquin river was central. Kayaking be aware of tide changes and you can use it to go one direction. Then tide change come back Southern Delta warms first. Smallies in north.

For me middle delta = from Mokelumne or mouth of the Sac to the Orwood \ Middle River bridge trussels.
North is North of the Moe or North of where the Sac meets the San Joaquin.
South anything south of Orowood (Old River)
Deep South = Tracy Oasis and further
" The River" being the Main Shipping Channel of the San Joaquin from Stockton to SF Bay

Depending on where you want to fish you can slide your Yak in at Paradise Point in Dissapointment and this would give you lots of access to very good fishing water without being on the main channel. Holland or Orwood is a great marina for heading south. For going North - drop in at Wimpy's lots of options to launch a yak that have plenty of sloughs and backwaters to explore that are outside of teh main channel.

Monte - honestly most people dont talk about "east delta" probably for a reason - I am with you though I think from Mildred / Lads through Stockton is probably east including the SanJoaquin to Mossdale (or is that south) and up the Cali. lots of different ways to break down the river and most guys dont want to "talk about it"

Besides being a good read for anyone interested in fishing the Delta, 'Fly Fishing the California Delta by Mike Costello and John Sherman', the book includes good maps and descriptions of the five Delta regions: North, South, East, West and Central Delta. The book was published by 'No Nonsense Guide' and can be purchased via Amazon
(https://www.amazon.com/s?k=fly+fishing+ ... nb_sb_noss.
The book should be available in local libraries.
