George, best bet is to go to your local fly shop. they will have every color or kind of feather and thread you can think of. Here in Modesto we use Sierra Anglers fly shop on McHenry.

I have some personal experience to share, but also a decent video on the topic. Matt Allen has a video on Tacticalbassin.com that goes over the topic and it will let you see whats going on.
My personal experience doing it amounts to two tips. WHen you tie the feathers strip a bit of the down off the ends and tie the thread there. The down gets messy and especially if you use glue.
And Second I choose not to use red thread, I like using white thread to blend in with the lure. Ill also use black thread and feathers for draker lures. The red is promoted as giving the fish a target or being a strike creator, so I use a red hook near the front of the bait, like on zara spooks or River2sea rovers.

Re: HELP ON TYING TREBLE HOOKS with feathers
alot of times you can get what you need at a craft store. The thread to buy is 100% nylon upholstry thread. You can get a big spool for like 0.99 and it is just as strong as any thread i have got from a fly shop.. actually i can pull it tighter than the kevlar thread alot of the time. Used this thread to tie jigs and trebles for 10+ yrs without a problem

Re: HELP ON TYING TREBLE HOOKS with feathers
I tie my own feathered trebles.
For me, the thread is only to hold the feathers or mylar on until I'm done. Then I put a drop of crazy glue on the thread, and it turns solid, no matter what thread I use.
I try to use thread that's strong enough that it won't break while I'm actually tieing. That's really annoying.
