Help on a drop-shot rod

Post by StrictlyBiznuss »

Hey guys...
I just wanted to see if'n I could get some opinions on what length and action of spinning rod that yo'll like to use for drop-shotting. Probably with like 8-10lb test line...any opinions?

uber sensitive, I'm able to feel the fish fart before the smell hits me

I use a Lamiglass Drop Shot Special. It's a 7 foot rod that also doubles as a darterhead rod. $120 at Fishermans warehouse. If I had the moola I'd go for the new Loomis GLX drop shot rod, but $350 is a lot to spend on a technique I hate and only try as a last resort.

For value and a very good warranty ($15 over the counter) I recommend and use the Shimano Crucial Drop Shot Spinning Rods. Model CRS-D72ML and the CRS-D72M. Caught a 4 lb 5 oz largie this past weekend drop shotting the ML rod and 8 lb flouro and it handle the fish beautifully. I use these rods for dart heading and split shotting as well. I used the Medium up at Clear Lake around docks and it work great, also able to feel light bites in 25 feet of water (havent fished it any deeper yet). They have a light tip and a solid backbone for light line techniques.

The hook keeper is great for drop shot set-ups, but marginal when rigged for dartheads and split shots because it is at the very bottom of the rod. I'll be adding a second conventional hook keeper to my rods.

Powell 681L 6'8" 4-10lb ex-fast action spinning rod. Thats the rod I would get. However, it sounds like you want to dropshot maybe around some cover or for bigger fish. Then I would step up to their 682ML...same length/action just a little more power. The quality and features of these rods is awesome. I like dropshot rods under 7' long, but thats just a personal preference. If you dont have a big budget, I always recommend a Shimano Clarus, they are great rods and very affordable.

I really like the Loomis DSR822S.
6'10''
6-12 line
Action Ex Fast.
Retail 245.00
I'm no expert when it comes to this style of fishing however I have tried other makes and in my opinion Loomis is the way to go.

i own a conventional casting rod by lamigles.......704xc matched with a shimano cronarch 50mg and spooled with 8lb test. this rod and reel combo works great. what is nice is i could fish finess or bubba shot. i am thinking about another drop shot rod and i will leading more to a crucial. they come in 7'2" spinning and conventional. they have a medium action model and a light model. very sensitive tip but enough backbone to set the hook. my buddy was dart head'n a 5"senko w/ no problems. try one out!!

o yea, if your ripping and like to use braid this rod will be fantastic!!

Forget brand

Find a nice 7' rod,
Medium-medium-light
4-12lb test rating
6lb line

Or Joe Bruce style:
5' rod

I like more rod so I can pick up more slack in one swing, but Joe has proven his way works great! 8)

Well I have 2. 1is the Wade rod's dropshot rod in a spinning and the other is in a baitcaster by Wade Rods.
The baitcaster is 6'9" and the spinning is 6'3" long. The shorter rod is for more of a vertical presentation.
Great Rods and well worth the price. Soon you will be seeing them back on the open market. He is building a new factory in Southern Cal. All the new building codes are slowing him just a bit. Hold on to your hats though as they will be back in full force.

This is the one I own - Shimano Crucial Drop Shot Spinning Rods - $139.99. The Crucial Drop-shot/Shaking Spinning Rods feature split rear grips that is advertised to lighten the overall weight (I can’t tell the difference) and an exclusive cutout in the fore-grip that will allow you direct contact with the blank for a better ‘feel' to detect subtle takes (I like this feature). They have the rods in 6'8" and 7’2â€

7 foot medium light bait caster..Like a top water rod..It is just that simple. Six pound gamma edge and you can handle the big ones too.
