Guidewear re-energized

Post by Don »

It's been like ten years since I've got my guidewear jacket and have been afraid to wash it,for fear of it losing it,s waterproof quality's. Came home today and my wife had washed it and my bibs, quess they were looking pretty bad ! My question to the forum is , should I spray them with scotch-guard or something else , or don't worryabout it! The jacket seemed to be soaking up some water last year any way, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Maybe ther're just old and they need to be replaced.

Don,

there is a product out there that you can apply to Gore Tex that will put the water repellent agent back in your Guide Wear. I can't rememberthe name off hand, but trust me it will come to me. Will repost the product name if no one else does.

Wash-in Nixwax

Post by Steve »

Once a year, I first wash my Goretex with Nixwax detergent (you just add the detergent to your washing machine), then I waterproof it with Nixwax waterproofing (once again, just add to the washing machine). The detergent is less harsh then regular detergent, and will not harm Goretex.

Plus, you should wash Goretex once a year anyway. What happens is that small pieces of dirt get stuck in the pin holes that make Goretex what it is (read about what Goretex actually is and youll understand this), and those particles provide a pathway through the pinholes and into your skivvies, so to speak.

You can find Nixwax products at any ski/snowboard shop (like Sports Chalet). This stuff keeps me dry during waterfowl season, and I guarantee you that I deal with more rain and harsh conditions during waterfowl season than any basser has ever experienced.

I've been hunting waterfowl for over 20 years and I would have to say that 60 mph in a bassboat during a rainstorm at the Shasta Anglers Choice tournament was harsher than anything I've experienced while hunting.......

Clearly youve never hunted ducks in Humboldt County in open water during a January storm that started in Japan, makes Shasta in the winter look like ClubMed.

Don,

The Revivex is recommended by Cabelas. Wash and spray while still wet, then throw in the dryer.

I think running a bass boat into the wind at 70 miles an hour during a heavy downpour is going to test your rain gear more than sitting in a blind or stalking deer.
Just something to consider.
I am going to use your method to rewaterproof my guides wear.

Clearly you havent runa fast bass boat

quartering into the wind where every wave you cross at about a half a second apart dumps 5 galons of water in your lap all over your head and in your partners lap one after the other until you need to slow down to let your bilge pump catch up.
Come fish with me in January on a windy rainy day at clearlake or the delta. then tell us which is the real test of raingear.

Again I apreciate your advice on waterproofing and will try it. I dont doubt its effectiveness I just doubt that you get more exposure to the rain in a duck blind than in a bass boat. By the way I have spent a lot of time in a duck blind in almost all kinds of weather

Finding Revivex

Post by RogerB »

I apologize. The lead to backcountry.com is no longer valid (even though they are still listed on the McNett Corp. web-site as an on-line dealer for their product).
You can go to www.Revivex.com for a listing of the many dealers and on-line sources of Revivex for Gore Tex.

You can wash your gear in a good cleaner for gore-tex and reproof the outer fabric with revivex, Phil's up in redding has it on the shelf. This doesn't do anything for the gore-tex but it will let the outer fabric repel the water again. One tip is to rinse the garment twice, this will help clean the gore-tex membrane so that works again. :) :) Hope it helps.
