Good CASTING rod and reel for very light lures

Post by bassman1975 »

I am currently using a spinning combo for light lures/techniques. For example drop shot, senko, etc. I'm talking 1/4oz or less. One of the combos I am going to purchase in the next 72 hours is a casting combo to be able to throw very light lures. I would imagine you want something with a soft tip so you can whip it out there a good distance. I am very looking at Powell rods because of the price. I currently own about 8 Dobyn rods and love these rods but at 250.00 plus I am looking towards Powell. I use Abu and quantum reels 90% of the time.
So with that said what rod (powell or Dobyn's) do you recommend and what reel would you recommend for throwing very light finesse lures. I thank you all for your input.

your reel selection should be just as important.

Dobyns 703c would be my choice. Maybe the savvy series would be more in the price range you are looking to stay in.

I use Abu Garcia STX paired with a Powell 703 glass CB rod. I use it for top waters, Staycee's, and smaller light crank baits. If you like a shorter rod the Powell 684 is also a good bet(graphite). I have and use both, but I usually prefer a longer rod.
Fishing should be fun.

By the way, using lighter line will also help with the casting. I go as low as 8lb.

I am a Abu Revo guy but for light lures I have found there is nothing better then a Chronarch 50Mg.

I have a vast selection of both Dobyns and Powell's as well. I would check out a Dobyns Savvy 663C. I have one paired with a Revo-S and it works good for 1/4oz. darter heads, 1/4oz. jigs, flukes, etc.
Don't ask about my username, all I need to say is check yours and check them often.

Check out a powell 702cef or 703cef. Both rods are excellent casting rods for the applications your using. The tips on these rods load great with small baits.

I also use the 50MGs for light stuff.
I've found that a light reel, with a light spool, and a med. light rod that will load up with light baits, is the key.
I use a Falcon "shoal cranker" med light 7' rod with one, and 8lb fluoro, and can cast 5/16oz jerkbaits into the wind all day.
No wind, and it's 1/4oz, or a 3/16oz drop shot rig.
Another good rod that I use for that stuff is a Loomis "Popper Rod", a 7', 0 power baitcaster that I bought years ago for half price. I am cheap.
I just bought a Quantum Smoke 100, which weighs only 6.15oz, and am trying it out this weekend on the same rods and lures to see if it measures up, or comes close, to the 50MGs.
At $200 each, as opposed to $360 for the Core MG Shimano now offers, I hope this reel fills the bill.

+1 on the Powell 702CEF. Pair it with a TD Sol and 8lb. sunline sniper fc and it's magic for anything from drop-shotting to light jigs.
