8 foot rod for pitching?
Generally speaking, is 8 feet too long for comfortable pitching?

Re: 8 foot rod for pitching?
I have an 8' rod that i flip AND pitch with all the time and I'm not even 5'3". Granted a shorter rod is easier but I don't have many problems with this length of rod.

You had better be tall with forearms like Popeye!

I use a 7'11" glx bcfr954. I'm not tall 5'9". Works fine, love the distance and leverage.

Re: 8 foot rod for pitching?
I use a Dobyns 805 Flip/Punch rod. It's very stout yet very light in your hand, I'm 5'9" and have no problem Pitching with it all day long. If anything make's long pitches much easier.
Re: 8 foot rod for pitching?
I have an 805 and 765 and can pitch with both with ease Im 5-9 average guy. My preference if I am pitching all day is the 765 as it has a softer tip and feels a bit lighter in my hands, and on the flip side I really like having the extra 6" cause I typically am not pitching all day I may be flipping a stretch the bank changes then I will pitch, may come to a point of rocks and bounce that bait down the rocks - but when it comes to flippin the extra length for me is key for a quiet flip presentation.
I am not sure if Dobyns still has the dealer promo where you can test ride rods, if not give a buddy a call and use his rod for the day and see which one suites you best.

We do have a dealer demo program. Thanks Ash. No problem pitching an 8 footer as long as it's not a tip heavy club.

Actually, I have done the Dobyns demo here at Bob's Bait Bucket (Savvy 702 drop shot rod - smooth as butter). Bob's has a Randy McAbee cranking rod, but no flipping sticks.

Re: 8 foot rod for pitching?
Gary, that is why I am changing from my tip heavy club, to Dobyns Rods for my pitching and flip sticks this year before I head out onto the Delta. That 735c as a jig stick is the sweetest fishing rod I have fished with, just unreal how well balanced and light she feels and the sensetivity is awesome. I was probably the hardest convert ever from my previous rods, but after fishing the 735c I cant wait until I move into the 805 Dobyns and the 765 Dobyns for flippin and Pitchin.Gary Dobyns wrote:We do have a dealer demo program. - But Jazz - to answer your question - the 8'f pitches just fine, especially pendulum pitching (I dont know if that is a word) but basically I just move the rod tip up with the bail open and the bait just glides right above the water - its all in the wrist.
Re: 8 foot rod for pitching?
Eric check out the Powell 804cef. I have 3 of these rods and they are excellent. Great tip, well balanced and all the power you can ask for. Its on sale right now

Re: 8 foot rod for pitching?
I am also normal height (5'9"), and I have found I can pitch with a 6'8" med. heavy rod much easier than with the same rod in 7'. For me, accuracy and presentation are everything, and the 6'8" rod just fits.
I do use a longer rod for flipping, but that doesn't involve the same need for rod action, at least not for me.

Re: 8 foot rod for pitching?
Hi Adam, I'm way ahead of you. Just received an 804c last night. I got it mainly for deep football jigs and such, but heck, if I like it I might just get another and use it for all-around flipping, pitching and maybe punching. That sucker is 2 1/2 feet taller than me.basslayer wrote:Eric check out the Powell 804cef. I have 3 of these rods and they are excellent. Great tip, well balanced and all the power you can ask for. I build them in S. Korea. We warehouse and ship from Yuba City, CA. Any questions on rods feel free to email us at dobynsrods@comcast.net or call us at 530-671-1989 We talk rods everyday and even get to fish them once in a while.

Re: 8 foot rod for pitching?
Ash,
You should check out the DX795 Flip. I picked it up last year when they first came out. Little lighter tip than the 805 Flip. Still has plenty of power for punching. IMO, more sensitive & lighter in weight. No problem fishing the rod all day. I'll probably get a second one this year.
BTW, I'm 5'7" & have no problems with either the 805 Flip or the DX795 Flip. I just like the 795 better.

I am less than 6 feet tall. Been pitching and flippin with a lamiglas 806 for years. 8 foot rod.
best flipin rod ever in my opinion

Re: 8 foot rod for pitching?
You 8 foot guys must be fishing mats and vergetation with no overhanging obstacles! It would be tougher to pitch an 8 foot rod around docks and overhanging trees. I guess I need to order the shake weight from the tv commercials to bulk up if I am ever going to use an 8 foot stick in tight quarters!

At 5'2" I'm so short even an 8 foot rod doesn't reach the tree limbs.toddmc wrote:You 8 foot guys must be fishing mats and vergetation with no overhanging obstacles! Re: 8 foot rod for pitching?
If you want some real fun try using a 8'6" salmon rod rod. I've been having been having fun with the extra reach since the salmon fishing has been temporarily banned since my return from South Korea. It has given me an extra flipping & pitching range.

Re: 8 foot rod for pitching?
8 foot rod is hard to beat for a perfect water entry when flippin
flippin, not pitchin. I stress "flippin" because I have only fished with 2 or 3 people that actualy do flippin the correct way. Dee Thomas being one.
Most guys just pitch.
The key is complete quiet, splashless, steth entry in the water.
Flippin is about setting the jig on the fishes head.
that black old jig comes sliding in silent with no warning.
the bass dose not see it or hear it coming. then the bait just appears within a inch or 2 of its nose. its natural reaction is to eat it.
present the bait in such a manner and the fish will eat it 9 out of 10 times.

Yeah ..... by using that extra six inches (just kidding, of course).DeltaBassBuster wrote:Ha Ha!! Cheating??
I think Dee Thomas originally used nine foot rods to flip, until they made up a rule that eight foot is the max for tournaments.
