Fluorocarbon coated vs 100% fluorocarbon
what is the difference? and does it make a difference if im gonna be using it for drop shotting?
Re: Fluorocarbon coated vs 100% fluorocarbon
100% fluorocarbon lines should be denser (therefore more sensitive) and sink faster. I believe P-Line Fluoroclear and Lake Fork are two of the coated lines. The Lake Fork line has more stretch than any line I have ever tried and lacks even basic sensitivity. It does handle amazing because it is so soft and it has a very small diameter for the rating. P-Line Fluoroclear has a very large diameter for the rating. It is very tough and fairly sensitive, but doesn't sink as fast as the more dense fluoros. I hope this helps.

Hey thanks for the reply, it is indeed the P-line fluoroclear that ive been so skeptical about, and now that you mention it, it does seem rather large in diameter. i found about 10 spools of it in my house after doing some cleaning and didnt wanna throw it on any of my reels until i knew a little more about it, and i think ill just stick with the fluorocarbon.

P-Line FluoroClear isn't any larger per lb test then the majority of 100% FC lines on the market today. You need to compare line diameter vs lb test. Sunline Sniper and Shooter are small diameter 100% FC line, usually 1 size small diameter vs lb test than other FC line.
Kep in mind there isn't any industry standard for lb test to diameter. The early FC lines were similar to Sunline FC diameters, then knot problems became a big issue, the result was most FC line suppliers went up 1 line size; leaving 12 lb as 10 lb to off set the knot issues and it worked! The reason is simple, bass are not line shy fish the majority of the time.
Stretch is another factor to consider; FC line stretches within a few % points the same as premium copolymer mono line. The difference is When FC line stretches it stays stretched and this weakens the line. This is why knots have been a problem, the knots that work good apply less pressure on the line where it exits the hook eye.
FC line does have less co-effiencent of draf in water than mono, slides through the water easier and is heavier, somFC line sinks, mono floats.
Hybrids of mono with FC coating like P-Line FluoroClear give you a compromise; less light refraction like FC and better knot strength with common knots like a Palomar, however is neutral buoyancy. The big difference is price; 100% FC cost at least 2X more than hybrids.

Re: Fluorocarbon coated vs 100% fluorocarbon
I have been using P-line Floroclear since it came out. At first I saw it as a compromise between mono and fluorocarbon as the pure fluorocarbon was so expensive. I'm not one to use the leader thing as it's an extra knot between me and the fish. At first I found the Floroclear to be stiff with lots of memory but they made some improvements and now I use it on almost everything except frogs, flipping and top water. I find it reasonably priced, pretty invisible, not a lot of stretch, 8 and 12 lb test are very strong, memory recovers nicely with a spray of Reel Magic once in awhile and overall a good line.
There's been much discussion about line and just like many other things, it's up you to find what you feel is the best for you. I think it's like Ford, Chevrolet and Chrysler! To each his own
