Flipping stick

Post by offduty »

Well I am looking for a new flipping stick due to a brain fart. I forgot to put the rod buckle on and The Kistler LTX2 7'11" went flying out with an Aldebaran on it.

Yeah sucks to lose an $800.00 rig, and that thing was about half a pound and very sensitive. So I want another good flipping stick, I loved the Helium 2 even though it was telescoping it was very sensitive.

The question is what do I replace it with that is 7"11"ish and very light and sensitive but preferably not telescopic?

I'll say, if there was nothing wrong with the old rig, I'd replace it with the same.

If you can find a used Steez 8' flipping stick, buy that one. If new, I would recommend looking at the TDZL801HFB ... either rod, I'd recommend a rod balancer from BPS (kind of a rubber boot that you can put leaded weights inside to help with the balance)

I use the Loomis BCFR954 GLX. It's 7'11" non-telescoping and quite possibly the lightest/most sensitive flippin' stick I've ever had in my hands. It also has the Nickel titanium recoil guides that are unbreakable, so it's also very durable.

Not too many better than the set-up you already had. I use that same Kistler 7'11" for tossing small swimbaits and ex-hvy blades. Kistler does make one piece rods in the LTA series, and that series is also very light and sensitive. The LTA's have new and improved handles and guides too. Quality and Made in the USA.

if your spending that kind of money on rods get a custom rod. Steve Biechman is the best, instead of trying to find what you want get exactly what you want. You will get alot better rod for alot less. You also get to choose all of the specifications on it like thread color, reel seat, guides, hook keeper, and many other things. Plus your name is on it. If you want to see some of his work I can arrange for you to see my rods just shoot me a message. Or give steve a call 530-604-5277 and he can help you out.

A steez weighs 4.2 oz that is HEAVY. The Shimanos are lighter and cheaper. With a Core 50mg and a Cumara you are still lighter than the kistler.
My custom builder has a blank that easily rivals a Loomis and its under 185 shipped. Its about 8.5 ounces with the 50mg Core. NO off the Shelf rod is under 3.4 oz unless its a 6'0 carrot stick with warranty issues. He feels no need to make 200-300 bucks a rod. I think the most expensive loomis blank is 125. Seeing when you build a rod the guides are about 20 bucks and the seat is under 5 if you are using a skeleton. You are still making $$ per rod.
He isnt using a Loomis, that would be more $$$ and a lot heavier.

They are NOT made in the USA. There is ONE Rod company in the USA and its not Kistler they get their blanks from CHINA. They USED to use batson, then switched to China 2 years ago.

My builder still uses made in the USA blanks from Batson.

Okay... My bad. Blanks are not made the in USA, but American fingers still build the actual rods in Texas. Great rods, BUILT by folks in the USA. TL

A custom rod sounds like a great idea if I can check out the blank first. I don't want to buy a blank sight unseen. If I get a custom rod I want to know what I am getting and the blank is the most important to me.

If you know of any custom rod builders with some stock I can see so it's not a crap shoot let me know. I live in Ventura Co and don't want to drive for hours, I do that at work.

I know I want 7'11" or 8' an extremely light & sensitive blank, low profile guides, a good low profile reel seat, split grips without front grip and a butt cap I can balance the rod with.

I can send you pics of mine, but you aren't getting near 8 oz with any 8 foot rod. Kislters are about 4.9oz for their 8 footers or more.

You can stay under 8.5 with a 6'6 under 9oz with a 7'0. The lightest rods en mass are carrot sticks. The best quality are Cumaras. Then the Kistlers are in a tie with the Steez's

Guys on this website helped design the Shimanos and are good hard working Americans too. My rod builder lives in Tenn and uses American when ever he can.
China makes the rods cheaper so they can jack up the price then tell you that you have a lifetime warranty if you break it on a fish.
My builder will replace a fish break. So if its snapped perfectly you are good. If you step on it..... lose the other piece LOL. Or just tell him and see what he can do

Dobyns 805 flip/punch. Not a split grip, which I prefer as well, but fits the other critera. I've really enjoyed using this rod this summer (I was trying to sell it new before using it but I'm surprising myself and keeping it).

This is the only Dobyns I own btw (well I have a dropshot rod which I've used like twice ever).

Take a look at Lamiglas XFT-766 or 806, made in USA., $220. Rod blanks available. J & T has a few brands of flip/pitch rods on hand to touch & feel.
