flipping jigs or creature's?

Post by yjjustforme »

I love using jigs but I find myself using them less and less more often out here on the delta. I still like to use em on lakes but I just Cant put down the tungsten and creature flipping rigs. I was wondering how many of you guys really still use jigs on the delta? :D

Always have A Wadda jig on at the delta. Only use creature baits when punching.

Jig fishing is what I've been doing the last 3 to 4 weeks (even when you saw me the other day). When the water temp is in the 60's or below (unless it is spawning time) I like to throw / flip / pitch / swim the jig becuase they are so versatle to use. If you are not sure what you want to use then use a creature as the jig trailer, I've done it many times with success. Good luck.

Its a one two punch for me but I dont go to ANY lake especially the Delta without a Wadda jig tied on. I found myself in a texas rig only rut a few years ago and realized i was fishing way to fast and too shallow - i was in a mental rut as well.

The Jig to me is a versitle bait that allows me to fish deeper and slower then i would with my standard flip bait. There are times in the peak of summer where everyone is flippin the shallows, and that is where that jig can really come into play in that 10-15' zone on points, rocks and ledges.

The Texas rig is great when flipping grass, and punching but sucks in the rocks - or more to the point the rocks suck down my tungstens. There is a time and a place for each bait, but I could not say that a creature has replaced my jig, but they are definatly trailers on my jig :D

I could have wrote this post myself! I had a similar post a couple weeks back because, like you I went away from jigs because the areas I was fishing had so much vegetation that a T-rigged set up was the cleanest solution. Cooch, shed some light to finding the right places to use a jig and what to look for etc. (keep scrolling down in previous posts to read).

I guess it helps to say that the majority of places I target have been tullys, and rock walls, not really big on docks or I should say I haven't had much luck.

Good question though, when to use a gig vs. T-rigged creature baits.

I would say that 95 % of the time I'm tossing creatures t rigged cause I'm always flipping tueles and mats, slop, hydrilla and so on and so on so for me its way more convenient and faster there for I cover more water than fishing with a jig. The other 5 % I will toss jigs to rock walls when I have to but most if not all of the time if I'm targeting rocks I'm always Tossing shallow crankbaits . And if I have to drag a slow presentation I use a brush hog Carolina rigged. I'm not saying that jigs are obsolete I just don't find myself using em as much as I used to. 8)

Were you fishing the Wadda Jig?

The reason why some of us were specifically stating the TnTBaits Wadda Jig is the unique arkie head design. Cooch's design on this head makes it the most versatile jig on the market today. It flipps through the grass and tulles with ease and does GREAT around the rocks. That wider head design keeps it from getting wedged in between the rocks. So its easy to go down the bank, flip tulles, docks, grass and rocks all with the same head. And lets face it some areas are snaggier then others in the shallows once you get past that 10' zone the silt kinda fills in those gaps in the rocks.

Sorry to hear that you busted off 4 jigs, but replace them out with the Wadda Jig at the Hook so you can fish the difference

I fish jigs all year long as you can use them at any depth and any type of area. hevy cover of open water they still work great!! And "jig" fish are BIG fish  :!: On the Delta I like the Blue and Black Wadda or the Brn an purple and DON'T foget the Claymoor's use them like a crank bait  on the out side weed lines. You may also want to try out the Wadda BOMB I like them in DIRTY water with a little water flow and I dead stick them an just HOPem every copple of min's just watch the line REAL close as the bass just pickem up and site their. Good luck and TIGHT LINES

Ash, do you find that the Wadda head design works better in rocks than a standard football shape?

Its a loaded questions har har har - I think both the Wadda and the Football Head get stuck in rocks - In our foothill lakes the wadda is Great at working around the rocks in the 1-15' zone as most of this zone is a verticle fall zone and I keep the jig moving. However if im dragging rocks, ill go over to the football head - its a different presentation the rocking of the bait with a 90 degree head as well as when Im going to a football head jig i start at 3/4oz and then go up the wadda only goes to 1/2oz.

As for versatility the Wadda jig wins hands down as its good in the rocks, good around tulles, grass etc... unlike say a football jig, great on rocks but sucks to pitch with, or a pointed grass jig, great for grass sucks around rocks. I'm a junk fisherman so the Wadda jig REALLY suites my style of KISS and hmmm that looks interesting

What type of line are you using? If yer flippen the rocks with braid, that's yer problem, switch to 20-25# fluoro. The other thing is how yer fishing your jig. If you are draggin it slowly through the rocks like ya do on the lakes, yer gonna loose a ton of jigs here no matter what style of line ya use. Use a hop-n-pop o swimmin retrieve, don't let that jig settle, keep it moving all the time. One, you'll stay out of the rocks, two you'll git far more bites on a jig here if ya fish it like a reaction bait, especially at this time of year!

I use both a Kreature and jig here all through Summer and Fall, yet put the Kreatures away in Winter & Spring. Which one I use depends on what we're looking for. If we're looking for numbers and aren't concerned about size, that Kreature does the job. If we're in search of quality bass and not so concerned with the number of bites we git in a day, play the jig and never put it down. We fish the Kreature from 3-10 feet, the jig 3-25 feet.

Cooch I would toss the jig up towards the bank then use a pop pop pause retrieve. Or parallel the bank and swim it I just find myself using creatures more than jigs cause I can cover more water. I just need to learn from a jig pro ash is gonna help me out soon.

I can't figure out how you can cover more water with a creature than you can with a jig..They both do about the same thing..I tend to use both quite a bit and settle down with the one getting the most bites/fish on any given day..Anytime you use a bait that is worked on or near the bottom or cover, you are going to lose some, weedless or otherwise..Hangups, although they are a pain in the rear, are just part of the game..If they ever come out with a totally snagless bait, chances are it will also be pretty much fishless too..

A Texas rigged creature flipped into cover is gonna go through probably the first flip. While a jig your gonna have to sit there and jiggle The bait to drop it through thus waisting time and having to clear any junk that gets stuck on the weed guard which takes even more time. To each there own I guess
