Fishing with the Barometer
Fishing with the Barometer
How many of you pay attention to the Barometer before and on the day of your fishing trip or tournament? I have started to pay real close attention and here is what I have learned to date (from instruction booklet I received with my barometer).
The Barometer range is 29 to 31 inch with 10 increments between each whole number. 29.0 to 29.65 is Poor fishing, 29.66 to 29.78 is Good fishing, 29.80 to 30.45 is Great Fishing, 30.46 to 30.95 is again Good fishing and last anything above 30.96 is Poor fishing.
Rapidly changing either way indicates good fishing.
Rising barometer is fish is at its best.
Falling barometer fishing is good at first then it steadily gets poorer.
A static barometer mean poor fishing.
An unusually low pressure mean poor fishing.
Now with all of this information what does it get me?

Umm... that quart oil oil I owe you next time we fish?
Great information Marty! I was wondering myself but I'm too lazy to figure it out for myself.

Marty are those #'s from your book or your findings ? Either way it's geat info especially if it's true. I would like to see some of the otheropinions on this topic.

It is from the little book – I was hoping others would jump in and add to it.
Like when does the pressure go down before the storm or after.
When you hear the weather report they say there is a Low or High pressure coming in. If you can get in before either of them come in you have a good day of fishing.

Absalutely Nuttin' ~ If that is the only thing you can stare at all day long !!Marty wrote: Now with all of this information what does it get me? [/b][/color]

BrothA ~ Keep tossin' those Big Hammers that I gave you on Rocks and forget the Barometer, Wind and Tide.
As Nike say's ~ Just do it !!

You know, we always called each other goodfellas. Like, you'd say to somebody: "You're gonna like this guy; he's all right. He's a goodfella. He's one of us." You understand? We were goodfellas, wiseguys.

You are right Dan, keep tossing those Big Hammers (and I do) and one of this day you get hit. Would it be nice to know what day!
If you know the fishing is going to be slow and you can set up for it. Instead of power fishing you can go finesse. I just see it as adding one more element to you arsenal to out smart old bucket mouth.

Re: Fishing with the Barometer
Hey Marty, I ain't never seen a barometer with a line tie and a hook, so fishing with one, much less being able to catch a fish on one might be challenging.
Yet brother Dan is right, if'n it looks like a Makeral Big Hammer, chuck and wind it baby! By the way, what was the reading on yer barometer between 12:30p-1:45p Yesterday, Dan and I had a ball out there on my lunch break in that howling wind! HAR! HAR! HAR!

Nice legs Brotha Dan - finally got 'em cleaned up I see?!?
Looks like you boys had some fun out there - good times!
As far as barometric pressure and its impact on fishing, although there are some general trends that mostly hold true, I don't give any consideration to it myself. I've had great days on both stormy/nasty days and bluebird skies, whacked 'em good and had 'em shut down on incoming fronts, and all permutations between. I don't have the luxury to pick my days and times based on lunar cycles, or barometric pressure trends, or level of weather comfort - I get out when I can and deal with it as it unfolds... it is what it is.

Re: Fishing with the Barometer
Marty,
Atmospheric pressure always falls as a front approaches then rises as it departs.
The lower the pressure the stronger the storm and corresponding wind. The strength of the wind is proportional to the size of the difference between the High and Low pressure, sort of like the steepness of a mountain as depicted on a topographic map. The steeper the slope, the closer are the isobars lines on a weather map (the greater the pressure gradient) the stronger the wind.
In the Northern hemisphere the wind always circulates counter-clockwise around the center of the Low (cyclonic flow) vice flowing straight in from the area of High to low pressure. This is due to the rotation of the earth. This means that if you stand with your back to the wind, the Low pressure center is to your left.
Be that as it may, far as I can tell fish seem to bite whenever they feel like it
