finesse jigs?

Post by Ryan L »

would like to try out some smaller jigs. what are some good brands? also what line and setup would you throw it on, love throwin football and flippin jigs but think some finesse jigs could get a couple more bites when things get tough

When I throw a finesse jig, I still like throwing a football head. (If you're talking the lakes that is) I like to throw a 1/4 oz berserk jig, and I'll trim the skirt way down, and If I can get by with it I'll cut the weed guard off. If there's cover around, I would leave the weed guard on and throw it on 12lb test flouro, and if it's open water, you can get by with 6 or 8lb flouro and cut the weed guard off. The other finesse jig I fish is a hula grub, on a 1/4 oz berserk football head. Again on 6 or 8lb flouro. Check out the jigs and jig heads at www.berserkbaits.com.

go with a 1/4 oz gamakatsu football head with a 4 inch hula grub.
Its a good rig, on 8 lb line, it is pretty good up to 15' and it is a slayer of the spotted bass.

A partner and I just won a little club tourney last weekend on finesse jigs. I got 1 good fish on DS to his three. They work awesome when you need to find a bite. Believe it or not, they actually can pull good fish. I typically use a few different types, but all with hand-tied rubber skirts.
In open water and rocks, I like a football head in 1/4oz. In open water with a sand bottom or light weeds, I like a weedless arky head in 1/4 oz for water down to 20 ft or 3/8oz down to 35ft or in windy conditions. Sometimes puffball-style jigs are the trick too. I usually throw them in 1/4oz also. I don't bother much with colors. The jig is too small or sparse in to make detail important. Usually brown, black, or olive. I use the trailer to add a secondary color.
