Filleting A Trout

Post by Kayak/Boats »

Hi,
I used to be a bass guy, catch and release.. now I’m more of a trout fisherman. I filleted my first trout today and what a mess. I know it will take time to learn but can someone tell me if the pin bones can be removed with the rib cage? Or do you have to pull them out one by one after the fillet?

Thanks

Hey Boats,
When I was and occasionally still fish for trout, I would gut the fish from anal opening to gill, and remove entrails with one pull. Then place in foil (for storage but fresh is best) add butter salt and pepper wrap tightly around a stick and place over fire or hot coals (barbeque will due) until done. Usually a about 10 - 15 minutes on each side. When opening, the skin sticks to the foil and if you grab the head and lift gently using a fork all the bone come off leaving the boneless meat behind. As far as fillet, well you'll have to deal with bones when cooking, but fork the meat off the bones when done. Hope this helps.

PS The family loved fresh trout over fire for breakfast, with eggs, toast, sausage and cheese while camping during opening weekends of trout season.
