Favorite topwater lure for open water

Post by Otay Michael »

I've been tossing the buzzbait a lot, it's great for tulles and brush on shore and I usually start it in the tulles or on the shore, but for open water I'm thinking a different bait may be more productive.

Gunfish seem to be a fav for folks, but I've not tossed it yet (I can see the design would be condusive to attracting feeding bass). Any fav colors on those? I figure any shad pattern would be fine, but?

Are they better, if you have tried them, over the TD Pencil? Thoughts?

I like the 'splash tail' too, but the darn front prop gets tangled in the line about every third cast so I'm thinking that the gunfish might have a similar action but less problems.

Do you have a different fav than one of these?
The Sammy has done me well lately too now that I think of it.
Thanks.

All I need to get into the money would be the four I usually get along with a 20# kicker.

Spook...Super Spook....M.S. Slammer... Sammy Not necessarily in that order as presentations need to be adjusted to meet the criteria of the day/fish. I've never been a fan of the gunfish ( to light ) I like the splashtail ...If you throw it on braid you can take some super glue and pour it on the line and (I wear a glove to do this) and work it into the line for the first foot or so infront of the bait and let it dry. No more problems  The splash tail is more of a stay at home bait and works killer for fry guard type fish but the other baits will get you a fish out of those wolfpacks that are out hunting down a meal or the loner that has it's ambush spot all picked out. Don't discount your buzzbait for open water. I could show you where I catch fish on buzzbaits at Cachuma and it's normally 100+ feet there depending on the lake level that year. I like really big baits for my topwater presentations...Try it you'll like it.

For me it goes like this

Reaction Inovations - Vixen
Spook
MS Slammer
Buzzbait for closer to shore
Pop R \ Splash its

The Vixen and Spook really seem to call fish up from the depths.

1) Splash it/Rico

I'm not much on the Buzzard, like them though

and I like a feather treble on every thing, does it help on the spooks...dont know, but it dont hurt
