Favorite "Shad" imitation for Drop Shot

Post by set'em good »

I have been doing allot of dropshot the last couple years and have found it to be one of my most effective techniques. However I can't get myself to use anything other than a few colors of 4 1/2" robo's. Which has always been a consistent producer. I have tried other types but end up using it for an hour or so and then going right back to my usual. (sometimes due to my partner in the back slapping them silly with the robo)

I have heard from many people that say they only use "Shad imitations", I was wondering what were people’s opinions on the difference between the two and what is there favorite dropshot shad imitation..

Thanks,
Set'Em Good

Smelt - Ayu and the Pro Worm with the gold blood line (i forget the name)

Shad - Robo Worm - Prism Shad, Ghost Shad, Baby Bass, Morning Dawn, Blue Crawler in deep water, Salt and Pepper, Smoke, Black, White, Peoples Choice, Folkstead Special, anything with a purple blood line and a chartruse tail - Mothers makes a great bait.

I drop either a prizm shad, oxblood or just nose hook a senko for drop shotting. It all works for me.

Hey Marc....

You're from WA state and probably have ample experience fishing for smallies....So lemme ask you this...
Is it just me or is that flashtrix just a smallie magnet?
In lakes that have a mixed population, I struggle to stick largemouth on it, however I can't keep those brown fish away from it...
You too?

Alex,

I have won several tournaments on the 4" Flashtrix here in both Washington and Oregon with smallmouths. I don't usually fish it much for largemouths because I focus on bigger lures for the green fish. Most guys have no idea how effective the Flashtrix is when using a dropswimming technique in clear water with a 1/16 oz or 1/8 oz QuickDrop sinker and 6lb fluorocarbon.

The 3" version is also deadly, and surprisingly it produces big smallmouths as well.

And of course the Yamamoto Shad Shape Worm is also deadly on smallmouths...I won a tournament with it on Lake Sammamish with 22lbs for 5 smallies before it was on the market. I had a sample package of 5 baits (color #239 of course) sent to me by GYCB the week before the tournament, and I caught 7 big smallies on them before I lost them all...but by then the tournament was in the bag, including big bass of the tourney!

Marc

I can attest to that Marc....
I've had sooooo many smallies follow that bait as I was reeling it back to the boat to make another cast...LOL. They definitely like to and aren't afraid of chasing their meals. Sometimes if I can eyeball them following far enough away(clear water/good visibility), I'll just open up the bail and free-spool. It seems to trigger bites :D

The Panic Minnow is another excellent lure, especially for smallmouths. It also works great with the dropswimming technique!

One difference is that the Flashtrix with its hollow body really reflects sunlight like the flash of a baitfish (hence the name), so when bass want flash or expect flash, the Flashtrix shines (pun intended). When a more subdued appearance is desired, use the Panic Minnow or Shad Shape Worm.
