favorite launch points in the delta?

Post by diyosa »

Trying to build a list of potential places we can launch the boat from so we can do some research on those locations. Considering the Delta for a visit in the near future and looking for good launch points, hopefully with easy trailering situations (just learned how not easy that is, need a bit more practice) and points where navigating is beginner difficulty.

We're used to just dragging the kayaks down the bank and have done it successfully (and enjoyed fishing) from Hollands Tract and Georgiana Slough. Open to locations out of the brentwood area or rio vista or elsewhere. Distance isn't too much of an issue (says the one who isn't driving).

Our Club usually launches out of B&W, not too challenging to back in and cheaper than most. Brannan Island State Park has wide ramps and a huge parking lot, but can be kinda pricey once you pay to get in and then pay again to launch. Russo's is nice, same price as B&W ($10) but can be kinda tricky to launch. Those are the three best ones I can think of...

Vallejo. So we are about equidistant from the Brentwood/Oakley area and Rio Vista side of things.

From where you are coming from, I agree with Stratos...

on that side there are 3 that I can think off but all are not the best if your new to backing down a ramp... good news is that if you do it a few times ate Russo's or Sugar Barge, you can back down just about anywhere.
Russo's - end of piper road
Sugar Barge - down the road a couple minutes from Russo's. (they also offer valet launching I think for extra money - meaning they will launch you with the tractor.)

The other place is Beacon Harbor (now Piper Point Marina). DO NOT TRY launching yourself... TOO CRAZY!
Launch is $10 and they will launch and pull you out with the tractor. Just disconnect trailer from tow vehicle and they do the rest for you... simple.

B&W is I think one of the easiest's ramps because you can almost back straight down. It's plenty wide can can do 3 trailers at once with experienced drivers. This is a little of a driver from say the Brentwood/Oakley area though. There is also Big Break if still open and I think a few other little ramps around that area... maybe some of the Delta rats can chime in and provide more options for you.
Stay away from Korths for a while..until you get better... only $7 to launch, but 1 lane and you got to be experienced due to angle, dock and a big pole in the way... haha..

Good luck...
Randy

Since when do you have to pay twice at Brannon?

For where you are coming from, I'd head straight down Hwy 113 through Dixon until you hit 12, go through Rio Vista, turn right after the bridge and go south to Brannon Island State Park. Super wide launch and huge parking lot. If you get there early there is a self pay at the ramp or the booth is manned later in the morning. I believe it is $18 for parking and launch. I don't know what the other poster means about paying twice. I've never had to do anything like that. From there you have access to a number of good west Delta spots.

The fees at Brannan are $10.00 for vehicle day use fee, and $8.00 boat launch fee for a total of $18.00. That is what I meant by paying twice, sorry for any misunderstanding

We ended up launching out of B&W both days. Thanks for the tip! Great easy launch site. We got into the water no problem. Getting back on to the trailer, not quite as smooth. I'm not comfortable yet behind the wheel of the boat but in time it will get better. Great group of people both days when we were leaving, Very Helpful, patient and gave us tips on which side was best for getting the boat out.

We can get there in under an hour and not have to pay toll so I'm thinking it will be our go to for now.
