Why did Evinrude motors go out of business. Lack of sales or they didn't see the market trending towards the 4 cycle market.
I see the many boat dealers Johnny Morris owns now. Other tackle business he bought and took over. I know take a lot of research & development that go in to each model motor.
It just a shame the somebody like Mr. Morris couldn't have save that company

Google BRP rotax outboard, that’s the evinrude parent company’s newest development. I would say some poor decisions were made.

Evinrude’s first direct injected two stroke Ficht models in the late nineties had problems with power heads blowing up. Especially the 200 and 225hp models. I have a 2000 175hp Ficht with 450 hours and it’s been a great engine for me, knock on wood. They seemed to correct that problem and the next model E-Tech 2 stroke is a damn good engine. When I bought mine new in 2000 it was the only 2 stroke allowed on Lake Tahoe because it burned so clean. When I ordered my TR-19 Triton my intent was to get a Mercury, but for some reason 2000 is the only year a 175hp Optimax wasn’t available. Naturally, in 2001 Mercury made a 175 Opti. Not sure why the Evinrude brand died?

They did go by the wayside for many reasons. They didn't follow the trend for the 4 stroke motors that the industry followed and they lost a great deal of business because of it. There were some serious issues with motors holding up and parts availability as well. With that said when Evinrude went away it was very sudden and a surprise to even many of their pro staff members.

As far as White River Marine they are pretty much a Mercury powered boat line across the board. By no means did the company that owns Evinrude go out of business they just closed up that segment Bombardier owns them and they are quite capable of keeping a company alive if its sales warrants.

If you have an Evinrude and need work done on it Boatmasters in Livermore is very competent at repairing it.

OMC filed bankruptcy in 2000 and Bombardier bought them.
the 1st thing Bombardier did was drop Johnson name brand, keeping Evinrude.
The FITCH engine series was a disaster that was blowing power heads until the problem was solved but too late to save the company. Bombardier came out with E-Tech line modernizing the profile but the brand name was poisoned by then, Evinrude brand was killed.
Mercury the oldest remaining brand name and Yamaha had the market with Honda and Susuki adding 4 stroke outboards.

This right here, they used COVID and retooling of the factory as factors, however KB said it best. I am sure if the sales warranted it they would still be around. Great opportunity for Bombardier to release a motor that has it's own story to tell and sale.

I had all 3 of these motors 115 XP150 & XP 200 all were good motors for me
2 glastorn bassboat 1 ranger bassboat
The 115 and the xp200 are still running

Evinrude didn’t die because it’s a bad product.

The Johnson GT & Evinrude XP 200 were popular 90’s era looper engines for racing. The 200 hp was 225 at the power head and easy to modify heads, carbs and air box to produce another 75 hp.
This was the golden era of OMC.
