Thinking about buying one for a wake bait reel. Loved my 300d! does anyone have the 300e that could give some feedback.

I did a little research and I didnt really see much of any change from the D version except for the color. Let me know if you hear something different. I have a D and love it too.

The differences that I'm aware of on the 300E are that Shimano added a bearing which is located on the drive shaft and changed the line guide insert to a Titanium coated design for better performance and improved durability with braided line.

Thanks Salmoides for the info. I wonder if that extra bearing makes any difference?

I have a 300D and really like it. Got it for a good price. I want another 300 so I can have two swimbait setups at the ready. Haven't decided on the 300D or 300E, price being the primary factor. If I get a 300E it will be during the Spring sales.

It won ICAST award!

The 300E won the best new reel for 2008 at the ICAST show - that should say something. It really is well designed and seems to feel better in the hand while holding rod and reel together - especially if one has a smaller hand. I really love it and the drag flawlessly handled some big fish recently.

Yes, there is a driveshaft support bearing on the E version, which the D version does not have. This is a very minor change and was only done so because they wanted the E version on both the 200 and 300 to match component wise. (mirror each other)

The titanium line guide is a huge upgrade however. This was done due the high speeds reels are now attaining with the big baits. The faster the line goes out the end of the line guide, the hotter it gets. It has been detected that ceramic guides don't dissipate the heat as effectively. Titanium does, thus the change.

Thus, you heat the line up enough with big baits all day, and experience line failure. Even 20 or 25lb floro, you can have the line fail and snap in mid cast! I've waived good-bye to a couple Hudds myself.

Hope this helps,

Dan

One question Dan, can I swap the ceramic line guide on my D with the new Titanium E version? If so, what will it cost for the part? Thanks in adavnce and I dont mean to hijack.

I'm interested in doing this myself as well as the bearing upgrade. I was told no by a Shimano rep at the ISE in San Mateo, but I'm hoping it can still be done.

yes, I believe the line guide can be changed if you change the idle, and worm gear as well. The shaft bearing is a no.

Cost would be around $20 for parts.
