Comparison(g loomis 844 glx to?) help please....

Post by D.B.COOPER »

I'm looking to get a jig rod asap while the sales(21% off) are on. :D I would like to get a rod that closely compares to a g loomis 844 glx casting rod. I just cannot pay over 400.00 for one of those. So next best thing. I throw 3/4 and 1 oz jigs(footballs) exclusively. I've been doing a little research and came up with the Phenix ultra mbx classic. What do you guys think? I know we are talking apples and oranges here when it comes to gloomis and sensitivity, and all I'm trying to do is get close before I make the purchase. Let me know. Thanks for your opinions. D.B.COOPER 8)

I used to fish a 844GLX, its a great rod. But 2 years ago I switched to a Powell 734 as I like it much better. The additional length is ideal for me a jig fishing.
Fishing should be fun.

Personally, I use the Dobyns Champion Extreme, Mike Long 784 for the size jigs you mentioned. Very sensitive, with great power and I like the extra length when fishing deep. If you're looking for a rod in the $250 range, the Champion 734 would be my choice, I also like that it's available with a split or full handle.

The G Loomis is the best rod out their the only thing better is the BCR series Loomis with the solid guides I believe it is longer than the rods mentioned by several inches

For the heavy football jig you might want to consider a 5 power jig rod.
Lamiglas XC 705 has similar blank and cork foregrip as Loomis GLX series.
Shimano owns Loomis rods, Lamiglas are made in the US with lifetime warranty and Dobyn's rods are popular.
I'm not familiar with Gary Loomis TFO rods, you might want to check them out.

I use the Mossyback BCFR893 (7'5" Med Hvy)for the same appilcation. it has plenty of back bone and a softer tip with a super fast taper. I know its a flipin stick but it really does work well for big footballs down deep. I also use it to flip lighter baits like tubes that my BCFR954 GLX it too stiff for.

Whats to compare, I sold and have for sale all my Powell and loomis rods to upgrade to Dobyns rods. I have a hard time believing that any one would want any thing else after using his rods.
Also no one stands behind their product as well as Dobyns. Even the the Savy is better than many of my loomis rods.

There are a ton of choices in this category D.B.! Try the Loomis 844 IMX. I have a couple and they are great jig rods for less money than the GLX. This rod is my all around rod choice and it works great when I throw 3/4 oz. football heads on bluffs. This last summer, I found myself picking up my Mossyback 874 more and more because of the three inches of extra length and the more aggressive fish that bite faster moving lures in the summer. This would be another great choice. My Dobyns 764 Champion is also a great rod, but a 5'7" guy like me has trouble fishing jigs slow with such a long rod.
