Pine Flat Lake was fishing tough for the Central Valley Kayak Fish anglers. The weather was perfect, hovering at the high 80’s and the water temperature was between 60 to 65 degrees. The wind was calm early, but the wind roared intensely in the afternoon, also, the boat traffic was typical of a warming trend, in one word - crazy. With the warming trend, the snow melting was at full swing, causing the upper reaches of the lake water to run colder than the lower end of Pine Flat Lake. After the lines were out and all the fish submitted to TourneyX, Cheng Xiong won at Pine Flat Lake with 79.00” besting second place by 2”. Xiong used topwater early to catch two bass quickly before the shade lines disappeared. Once the sun was high and the topwater bite slowed, Xiong used a drop-shot to fill his limit.
“I was using the 3” Morning Dawn live shad on my drop-shot rig.”
Xiong quickly finished catching his limit on the drop-shot rig. After Xiong caught his limit, he switched to a chatter bait paired with a Zoom fluke slowly rolling it on the bottom and caught a 19”.
“The 19” bass flopped out of the boat before I could get a picture of it.” said Xiong, “It haunted me for an hour after losing that fish.”
Xiong moved to a point and switched to a 5.8” Keitech in the silver side color and caught a 20.00” spotted bass. The very next cast, Xiong caught giant but came unbutton. He finished his day fishing the large Keitech on several different points to cull up for the win. He would cast to the point and slowly reel the Keitech. Xiong thanked Donovan Van Der Paardt for putting on a great tournament and all his hard work. Xiong also thanked Copes Sporting goods for all their support with CVKF. Xiong thanked his girlfriend for always supoting him and all his supporters from SkunkCity.
Angel Sanchez finished in second place with 77.00” just beating third place by 0.25”. Sanchez found a reaction bite on points with a rip bait, spinnerbait, and a rattle trap with a few on a drop-shot. Sanchez worked points with rocks 10 to 15 feet deep. Sanchez filled his limit the last fifteen minutes of the day on an underwater island that he had found during practice.
“I fished hard all day long to get my limit.” said Sanchez. “I caught my last fish with only 15 minutes left in the tournament.”
Sanchez thanked his wife for all her support and Donovan Van Der Paardt for running the CVKF events.
Robert Yamamoto came in third place with 76.75”. Yamamoto used an underspin with a 3.8” Keitech in the back of a cove where the fish were working bait. He caught three of his bigger fish early in the morning in that cove.
“I moved to a main lake point where the wind was blowing and picked up caught his kicker fish.”
Yamamoto was using a 3/8-ounce underspin in about 10 feet of water with bait caster with 12-pound test with a slow retrieve to catch his fish.
“With just 10 minutes left, I caught an 18.50” that made the difference for my day.”
Yamamoto thanked his fiancée for all her support with his fishing
