i have pictures if someone wants to post them for me....i have no clue how to do it. just pm me with an email or cell number and i will send them to u. That fish was awesome! I dont believe there has ever been a bigger fish weighed in in any tournament ever from elites down to the FPT! The pictures do not do it justice in any way! I weighed in multiple 4 and five pounders and its mouth looked like it could eat them! Way to go kyle!

The bass is being reported as 18.71 lbs; I believe that would make it the heavist bass ever caught in a origanized bass tournamnet and in NorCal. Congratulations.

thx marty. Those pictures dont give that fish any credit. as u can see in one of the pictures he had to remove the divider in the livewell to make the fish more comfortable. Kyle also released her back where he found her after all was said and done!

WOW !!! What a great catch. I knew there were biggins in that lake and now there's proof. How 'bout some info on how you caught her. Nice finish, and thanks for returning her to the same spot and keeping the strain going. What a great wall hanger that will make. Congratulations Kyle.

Johnny C, now you've got your work cut out for you !!! LOL LOL

He caught it on a jig that he said was laying in the water while he was retying another rod. When he went back to retrieve the jig....."FISH ON"! A size fish we may never see again in our lifetime!

Little added foot note: Kyles partner never showed up for signups so he had to fish alone! Imagine trying to boat that hog by yourself!

Now what?!!

Post by Larry Hemphill »

What an accomplishment!! Could you speak clearly after that? You obviously did everything right to get her to the boat!! The big question is - will you be excited on your next fishing trip when you catch a 2 pounder?? They all may see a little smaller for awhile. After I caught a 14 pounder several years ago, the next bass I caught on the following trip was 4 lbs - and looked like a 1 pounder!! I'm sure you will be able to handle this serious problem, however!! Thanks again for inspiring all of us!!

Way to go Kyle!! Definately a fish of a lifetime and I hope you got all the critical measurements so you can get a replica made! Definately an acomplishment that most people in the fishing community will NEVER be able to repeat but it is what we all strive for. Every time I fish Melones now I will be thinking of that fish looking at my bait!!!

Small head? it's bigger than Kyle's! lol.. it may be a small head compared to the body, but I'm curious if that fish has some more growing to do.

Press Release
Giant Largemouth Bass Caught at New Melones Lake

On Saturday, March 20th, during an Anglers Choice Western Rookie League Tournament, 20-year-old Kyle Gentry of Oakdale caught the fish of a lifetime- an 18.11-pound largemouth. There have been very few fish of this size caught in the world, and this may be the biggest bass ever weighed in during a tournament. The big bass had a 28-inch girth, and was 30 inches long. She was fat and healthy, like all of the bass we are seeing out of New Melones Lake.

Kyle comes from a fishing family. His parents are John and Shelly Gentry. Both are well-known anglers, and both competitively bass fish. In fact, his mother Shelly was the first woman to ever tournament fish in the front of the boat (that means she was in charge). Kyle has been fishing tournaments since he was six years old. His parents taught him sportsmanship and the importance of catch-and-release from an early age.

Kyle and his parents share a boat. Kyle had gotten overextended in his finances, and his parents told him he could not go fishing until he caught up with his bills. He had just gotten boat privileges back, and managed to scrape up enough money to fish the tournament. He had enough cash to pay for the entry, and to get into the Big Fish option, but he didn‘t have enough money to enter all of the options (which ended up costing him about $1300 dollars in winnings!).

Kyle was fishing in the back of a main lake cut, fishing about 20 feet deep. He had tied on a homemade brown/purple jig (hand-tied by family friend Deacon Fernandes) with a cinnamon/purple Yamamoto 5â€

Kyle is one of my best friends, I called him around weigh in time to see how he did. He told me this fish was 12 or 13lbs. (He had never seen anything over 10lbs until he seen this one jump). He told me he caught her around 10:30, he also told me he didnt catch a fish after that because the shakes were so bad he could only fish with a swimbait.

Kyle is a good guy and a good fisherman, he understands the importance of catch and release especially with big fish. he deserved to catch a toad and a toad what he caught.

I'm also really impressed with how he took the time and effort to take her back to the same exact spot where he caught her. Not quite sure what the words are but his young man is a class act for sure, well done.
His Parents should be proud. :D
