can fish see red fishing line?

Post by tmulliken »

why is it tackle companies spend millions on developing bleeding bait type lures, red hooks, and red everything else to attract and/or trigger more bites, then sell us on the "fact" that fish can't see red mono once it gets to some certain depth? Both lures and line are selling big time. Power pro has gotten into the red line thing as well.

It's true that red is the first color to "disappear" at a certain depth. This doesn't mean that fish can't see the line though. All these red lines are just going to look black or dark once the color itself isn't visible. It's just a gimmick.

Line is translucent. Hooks, baits and other stuff is not. Subtle difference, but I guess it's enough to make a difference.

Im glad this was posted because my buddy and I just had this talk. How can any color then clear be better? If the thought is that the red goes away after going down 10ft or so then clear must really go away. I just cant buy into it.

Yeah but the red line is still dark no matter if it shows up as red or not. It's going to be more visible than clear line.

I actually just saw a show on this this weekend on the show with Al Linder(SP) (was hoping to catch a Waleye show  ) and they actually covered this. Apparently the color red helps fish see the lure better and is one of the colors they see best (not the only one). They also covered red line and the way they explained it was red line doesnt disappear in the water, but pretty much helps blend in with the back ground. An example would be that red line would better blend with water that is dark or murky and would stand out in clearer water. The "scientist" with berkly explained that it gave anglers an option to help mask their line with different water conditions.

They also broke down about the color red not being seen by fish as blood but more of something that stands out and they can see better.

Hope this helps. Tight lines.

Been many posts involving this ..true..red does disappear soon....atleast too the human eye . Fish...no proof either way . We have all seen times when "skybluepink(insert your color) with RED flake" worms worked and we swore that it was the difference . But..all the red hooks,line,baits...do get bites.$$.from fisherman, lol I remember when I first got in this madness...at Castaic....everyone had to have a "chartruese" colored tail on worms...*poof...now hardly hear anything

Well I guess I dont fit into the above 'MOST of us' cuz I use Cajun Red almost exclusively and have for several years.Does it dissapear? Couldnt tell ya but it is TOUGH line-ask my buddies when I get hung up! This stuff dont break.Anyways just keep spending your money on 'quality'line like P-line and I'll just keep using my Cajun Red-go ahead and try it I wont tell nobody-it'll be our little secret ;) Tight Lines-

I like to use different colors of line to identify the line test.

Just get Reel-Stix, I just got some and they're pretty sweet.

As far as red line, I used it, didn't like or dislike it. I only fished with crank baits at all sorts of depths and got bit, but not more than any thing else. forget the red stuff, buy flouro!

I'm not buying into this red line,,,, sure I know about the light spectrum stuff and red dissapearing first underwater...... maybe it's intended for deep clear salt water applications.. But I can't believe a red line would be less visible to a fish in shallow clear water than say flouro............ Fear Change

Red hooks.... I haven't bought into that either. Some guys swear buy em. Personally, I doubt they make a difference either way. I've even taken a few red hooks off because they just didn't look right to me on an otherwise natural looking bait. If I want red, I use a bait w red on it....

As for red baits.... YOU BET..... I'm a beleiver... it's a Go-To color

It always seems funny to me how we as fisherman try to over-analize stuff and come up with some complicated reason or minute detail why bass eat.......... when it usually boils down to: location, timing, and presentation.......... the catching part is easy once those factors are met...

When we had the shop, Jigs Bait & Tackle, we could not keep enough Cajun Red in stock. We were always sold out of 8lb and 10lb it seemed. People for some reason just liked it.
I know not why. We use Trilene green.
