Post by Allantek »

Please help I need your input.

Yes they see... They see black the best, and that's the color to throw. You can finesse your color selection from there.

They can see just fine at night.

If your lure is between the fish and the surface (topwater, shallow swimbait, etc) then the most visible color is black. If you hold a black lure up to the sky at night, you can see it makes the most pronounced silloutte (sp?).

If your lure is lying on the bottom, white is usually the easiest color for the fish to see. If you lie several lures on the bottom of the boat you'll see the lighter one usually stands out the most, especially if there's a dark bottom content.

One popular choice is black/chartreuse which gives the bass something easy to see wherever the lure is. I generally prefer straight black, unless the water's muddier (less than 5 ft vis or so), in which case I'll try something with some chartreuse, or some other contrasting color. I've never tried white at night before, though, so I couldn't say...

I'm curious about how lights at night seem to affect the fishing. Are night fish spooked by lights? What about UV lamps? Are they spooked more by lights that are always on or by the lights that come on and off occasionally, such as a headlamp or boalites? I haven't done a whole lot of night fishing, but they don't seem to get too turned off by the lights. I'd like to know what the other anglers experience has been.

Any thoughts?

Bass DO NOT like light at night. The bite normally shuts off when there bright moon comes up. The bite has always been better for me when the moon is not lighting up the water. And that goes for light too. I, and most guys that fish at night, want as little light on the water as possible. If the moon is bright, I'll fish areas that are shaded as much as posssible. Shining bright lights on the water such as head lamps and such IS NOT good in my opinion. As far as netting fish goes, its helpful to have a flashlight on the net but I wouldnt recomend anything more than that and you shouldnt keep the flash light on long either.....again in my opinion.

Do worms change colors at night?

If you are using a Black Worm or Lighter color worm, will the Bass see the colors or will it sence that something is moving for curious bite.

The darker the worm the darker the silluette (spelling), the bigger the bait , the bigger the silluette. Hence the use of 10" power worms. Some guys go as big as 11-14" black worms at night as well. .. not uncommon.

I prefer a big bait that has ribs to move more water. Gee Gee baits has a great 8" ribbed night bait the I swear by.

HaHaHa yeah at the last DV night event she had me like 8 to 0 in the first hour. It took me 2 hours to catch her. I ended up catching more...thank you very much haahahahah.. It just took a while to find my rythym. 8)
I swear it was because thewind was howling and it was a bitch to control the boat on our spot. At least thats the story I'm sticking with. :D

As far as the lights...I'll have to pass because I like the darkness. I recommend that everybody else gets them though. Shine them right on the water, the bass love it. I'll just follow behind and vacuum up the scraps.
