breakaway split rings
breakaway split rings
I haven't tried the breakaway split rings and would like to know how well they work. Who handles them in the Stockton area. Thanks in advance. Ken
Re: breakaway split rings
DO YOU MEAN NORMAN SPEED CLIPS ?
Re: breakaway split rings
I read about these split ring somewhere and the advantage was to have the hook break loose before losing the lure. I intend on trying them on spoons if they work as advertised. Ken
Re: breakaway split rings
The used to be called lure savers but I'm not sure what they are calling them now. They do work really well as long as you stay with in the breaking strength of the line they are rate for. I use alot of the one rated for 12# on my crankbaits and they work just like they are supposed to. Have not lost a fish on them yet do to the ring opening. You do have to watch out if you wedge the crank bait in to something and its not the hooks that are holding the lure to the cover.

Clear Lake - Yes - I have lost several of my pricey, tough to replace Cranks to hang ups that I could have got back if using the Lure Saver rings. Prolly wouldn't use lower than the 12# ones though.
Delta - Prolly Not - perhaps only the greater than 15# ones if'n I did

Re: breakaway split rings
I use 12lb flouro and 12lb mono for my cranks. What size lure saver would you recommend. I read somewhere that the size for 12lb can open up if you try to put pressure on a fish with 12lb line.

Mark,
I plan on primarily using the 10# with 12# Sunline Machine Gun Cast and 13# Sunline Defier and the 12# with 14# Sunline Machine Gun Cast and 15# Sunline Defier

LOL Bro if one of those Delta/Clearlake gorillas gets a hold of a lure with one of those split rings on it I'll give your treble hook back to ya when I catch her.

As I see it, it won't be much different than landing the Gorillas I have caught on 4, 6, 8 or 10#. That is what good equipment is for. If you bully 'em in, kiss 'em good by. If'n I do that, then yes you can return my trebles when you git 'em.

Re: breakaway split rings
Well Gary, maybe you can teach me something about cranking 4 lb and 6 lb test line on Clear Lake and especially the Delta.
I've been to afraid to use light line while fishing those waters, what rods are you using in these situations?
How do you drive those hooks into a big bass using 4lb or 6lb line?
I upgrade all my hooks and use a minimum 7' rod med/heavy while cranking the Delta.
I'm sort of new to this so I could use all the help I can get.
Thanks,
Tobe

Re: breakaway split rings
Tobe,
I guess I just learned how to catch big fish on light line because I learned to fish on the highly pressured clear (drinking) water, big fish factory, reservoirs of Southern California like Casitas and Castaic. I don't normally crank with anything less than 8# line and that is not on the Delta. Most of the 4 to 8# line fish were usually on soft plastics and finesse jigs but a couple were on Rapalas. On the Delta, depending on the bait I am throwing it is usually 12 or 15# cause I like the extra action I get out of my baits. I use a medium action Phenix Cranking Stick and have never had any trouble get the hook to stick. I tried going to a heavier rod and I found myself losing more fish than I would get in the boat. One thing with my crank fish, I very rarely "cross their eyes", I just grind into them and then do a "forceful" sweep set horizontally across my body. I find setting the hook this way I can move the fish farther from strucure faster. Think about it...if you are doing the "standard" hookset where you have your rod at say 9 or 10 o'clock and you yank straight up to say 11 or 12 o'clock (a 3-4 hour sweep), how far are you actually moving your rod tip (a? When I do a horizontal "grind and sweep set", my rod would still be a 9 or 10 o'clock but I am "sweeping" from one side of my body to the other (basically a 8-10 hour sweep), thus almost doubling the distance my rod tip travels effectively turning the fishes head to swim toward the boat which is usually in deeper water and away from the cover the bass was lurking in. It is also amazing how far you can lead a fish out of cover with any bait if you don't set it into a panic by "crossing it eyes" (Ask Gary Yamamoto about this). Yes, there is a time and place for "crossing eyes" but I usually don't find cranking or ripping to be one of those times. I am not the best crankbait fisherman in the world but I found something that works for me. I also tend to fish a lot lighter line (primarily 12# to 15#) than alot of guys on other baits as well. Most of my bigger fish (over 6#) on the Delta this year came on 12# flouro as a matter of fact the fish in my Avatar came on 12# Sunline Sniper.
