So, I don't fish alot of braid but I'm doing my homework on it. Especially since I'm planning some Delta trips soon.
I've heard that 20lb braid is good for most topwater baits.
That light braid is good for spinning reels, for trout.
That Braid is the go to line for frog baits 65-80lb.
and I assume braid can be good for jigs.
What do you guys use braid for, what are your preferences?

Re: Braided Line
20lb braid is super thin with the same diameter as 6lb mono (per Suffix). One little nick in the line &.....
30lb (8lb mono diameter) with leader for spinning = Delta finesse
I use 50lb for topwaters & pitching. 65lb for punching. 65lb for (topwater) swimbaits like the Punker.
All this is for Delta waters. If I am worried about visibility, I can add leaders.

Re: Braided Line
Everyone has different opinions about using braid. My regular fishing partner hates to use braid.
When I fish the Delta, I have most of my reels filled with 50 or 65 lb braid (the only exception is my dropshot outfit which has 20 lb braid).
You never know what you hook while you're fishing. I've caught 20+ lb stripers and salmon while fishing for black bass. My cousin caught a 33 lb striper throwing a 1/2 oz spinnerbait one morning.
For topwater, I use 65 lb braid because I would hate to lose one of my punkers or other expensive lures if a big fish took it into thick cover and I couldn't pull it out or the line broke.
Also, all of my rods (Lamiglas and Powell) that I use 50 or 65 lb braid are medium heavy.

Re: Braided Line
ACM,
So, I don't fish alot of braid but I'm doing my homework on it. Especially since I'm planning some Delta trips soon.
If I were you yes, go with some braid. For general casting and pitching, I use 30 or 40 pound braid with a 5' leader of 100% FC. The FC leader will vary depending on what i am throwing. On the delta I usually keep several spools just to adjust what i am fishing and where. I will keep spools of FC from 12lb to 25lb. I usually throw 17lb and 20lb the most. 12lb is for my spinning outfits and 25lb is for the nasty stuff or if I want to tie on a MISSION FISH to my flipping rod.
I've heard that 20lb braid is good for most topwater baits.
For topwater i just switched over to not using a leader. I was very unsure of my knots w/ braid but that problem is fixed. I like 40lb for braid. not to thin not to thick. still can be cast and managed easily. 20lb is what i use on my spinning gear w/ a long leader because it's to thin and you can break off easily due to some thing sharp. 20lb is more for like ripping with a leader, small senkos, drop shot, wacky rig, etc..
That light braid is good for spinning reels, for trout.
light braid is good for trout, shad, and bass. it's great for everything you would just need to tie on a leader to match your fishing conditions.
That Braid is the go to line for frog baits 65-80lb.
correct! although i have seen some old video clips of guys fishing braid o 25lb mono, saying braid is interfering with their hook up and landing, i do not agree. you could go 50lb for the frog, but that depends on the stuff your fishing over.
and I assume braid can be good for jigs.
you got it! I love braid and jigs, 30lb, 40lb or 50lb, is all you need. you choose. I do need to get back in tune with FC and jigs...
What do you guys use braid for, what are your preferences?
I have not spilt shot with it. i do not like to drop shot with it yet! cranks, no but some do.
it depends on where i fish and what time of the year. like now if i go to a motherlode lake and there is a reaction bite on. I may have 1 or 2 rods with braids, but the rest are all mono and FC.
Good Luck,
Steven

Re: Braided Line
for Jigs I actually prefer flouro. I use braid in most of my other applications but I'm usually tossing my jig into rocks and the braid can be cut very easily.
Re: Braided Line
Iv'e only fished the Delta one time and had a blast the info you guys are willing to share is awsome. My first thought when I fished the Delta was what line ,and you guys spelled it out really nice.
Way to go!!!
