George, for me it was closer to the shorter end of your estimate. No, you do not have to study. You do not have to do it all in one setting and can close the program, it saves everything for you and then you can pick up where you left off at your convenience. I did the one at BoatUS Foundation. You work through the tutorial they provide for each section and then take a little quiz at the end of that section. If you don't pass the quiz then you just review the section again and re-take the quiz. Its pretty low key. Good luck!

George
I went to the Division of boating and waterways. They have the exam booklet and tests for free. The only draw back I have is that you have to request a test sheet and they will mail you one. Return it by mail and they are supposed to send you the card if you pass the test. I opened the booklet in one window and test A in another. Now waiting for the test sheet to fill out answers.
Others I have spoken with have taken the exam online (I couldn't find a free one online as I'm not a Wozniack). I don't mind waiting, but I do wish they had the test sheet online so it could be submitted electronically.
Good Luck

I was hesitant at first pushing back at more rules. then realized its a one and done, I got online and paid to take their study guide and pre-test. Then paid again to take online exam. passed and received boater card in the mail. total time investment about 3 hours. Cost seemed a bit high paid for study pre-text (which you have to do) before your allowed to pay and take exam.
All and All it wasn't a big deal and once complete you don't have to worry about it anymore.

The BoatUS Foundation course is free. They do ask at some point on their website while you are taking the course for a donation if you are so inclined.

I took it and passed when it first came out. I was afraid that, if I waited for my age group, I would be too old to remember all the stuff. Hahaha
Seriously, I am glad they require it. I run across too many boaters, mainly water ski and wake borders, who don't have a clue about boater safety and etiquette ( I had to look that one up).

I took my test at the California Dept. of Boating and Waterways when it first came out as well and I passed. Believe me, if I can pass the test ANYONE can pass it!

That's the problem anyone can.
Pass or fail don't mean squat. I have about 40 years of boating experience. I'm better than most. Fresh, salt, rivers, i've done it all. Been there done that in all kinds of situations.
A license doesn't change squat. I boated with a guy that had a "licnese" a couple months back. I was nervous. He sucked.
You Mofo's fell into the trap of our government. (Besides Mark, he was snagged at birth).
There's better ways but it won't happen.

It will educate some. Those who take it seriously.
In my opinion to license boaters online is by in large a waste of time. In person training would be much better.

If insurance companies required a boaters license to get your boat insured, or to operate one, like the do cars, people would get educated in a hurry.

It should be mandatory imo. Go out on any public during a Holiday and you all would agree.

😂
It’s a good thing to educate. But take a look at the way people drive on the highway around here licensed and insured.
Stiffer penalties and more enforcement to go along with education is needed
