Boat Seat repair/ design flaw.

Post by acm95301 »

Hello all.

Last September I bought a new 2009 Basttracker 175txw. Last week while fishing on the delta, the backrest portion of my seat came apart. The seat is in two parts: the seat, and the backrest.
Each part attaches to the boat directly without any kind of frame.
The backrest attaches with six hexagonal wood screws...must be close to 3/8 in scews that are bropably 1.5 inches long , maybe 2in. But they just screw in ... no nut, no fastener, nothing. So, guess what happens when a 200lb...er plus guy gets up and down a few hundred times...you guessed it the screws saw themselves out of the holes. and the screws can be retightened or moved...and Im sure if I took it to Basspro thats what they would do. But I beleieve this is more of a design flaw , and its bound to continue unless redesigned. Any ideas on clever fasteners that wont take up alot of room or require adjustment of the seat portion?

Thanks

I'm not to familiar with your boat, but if you can get to the area of where the screws go through the boat maybe you can put some nuts and bolts with lock washers on them. Second option is putting some kind of adhesive on the original screws like liquid nails or something to keep them from working there way out,but if you ever need to remove that seat your in for a rough time. Its kind of hard to help with out some kind of picture.Maybe add some kind of backer board, screws dont wiggle out of wood that easy.

THe screws bore directly into the seat, so unless I put some fastner on the seat, putting nuts on it wont work. The backer board is a thought ive had, but it will need to be thin or ot will push the back of the seat foward.

Yeah sounds like a backer board might be a good choice. I build speaker boxes for myself and friends and we use MDF board. And we got big woofers pounding on those boxes all day and the screws never work loose. The only bad side is your gonna have to probably go with the thinnest they make which I believe is 1/4 inch,we use 1 inch MDF. Would some kind of Adhesive work, like loctite or something ?

The seats on my 2008 Champion are set up the same way. I learned to check the screws on my seats after every day on rough water because the screws work loose fairly quickly.
