Big tubes

Post by biteme »

The tube has become a go to bait for me, they just flat out work! I also like to toss swimbaits and bigger baits. I picked up some big tubes, about six inches. Cant wait to try em but I must say its going to take some time to get confidence in them. Has anyone on the site had any luck with big tubes?

Just ask Ish Monroe(I hope I spelled his last name right) He loves to use big tubes. EXPECIALLY for big spawning females! I belive you can find his big tubes over on tacklewarehouse.com possibly even basstackledepot.com I belive they are made by Canyon Plastics?

Yeah, and check with Bill Siemental and some of the other big bass hunters - they use them also, and not just for the spawn.

There's a section that addresses them in the BBZ, as I recall.

Tubes have been a popular winter bait here on the river fer ages. Most guys will pitch them into the tulles in the winter when the bass are very slow and lethargic. Reaction Innovations Cal-420 and Hemotoma are very popular here, these aren't as big as say a Toro tube, but much larger than tubes we'd use say at Shasta and Oroville or other lakes fer spots and smallies. I actually got to spend a day fishing with Bryan Velvic in a spring even up at Clearlake in a BassMasters event a few years back, fishing the Toros. It was kinda cool watching them bigger bass gobble that thing, although I've not had much success using them since that day with any regularity, but it can be a great spring bait when big fish are on beds.

How do you guys rig the Big tubes? I have tried to do it the same as I do my small tubes but it just don’t look right. I was thinking of using one of those big swimbait hooks and doing it Texas style.

The best rig I've found is using a Falcon an 8/0 3/8 oz screw lock swim bait hook on my Tora Tubes, I remove the screw and rig it same as you would any other tube.
I feel the best results come from having the eye on top of the bait like conventional tube rigs, this allows the bait to spiral down.
The Tora Tube makes an excellent follow up bait when throwing swim baits.

Big tubes 8" - 10" do not work! Please do not try them! :D :D

Rigging / weighting them is tricky, but if you keep playing around you will figure it out!

Marty- I picked them apart one morning with Gene at The hook .... Ended up using 1/2oz tube weights with brass rattles and a 6/0 offset Gama. 6/0 works great for the size of the RI tubes.

It "is" tricky to play with the first couple of times ... But I got it down now and have it tied on a 6' Floro Leader Tony Pena knotted to #50 braid.
You know, we always called each other goodfellas. Like, you'd say to somebody: "You're gonna like this guy; he's all right. He's a goodfella. He's one of us." You understand? We were goodfellas, wiseguys.
