Big Game Mono ---did it change????

Post by Derrick »

I have using big game for 15+ years -no problems. My last 3 spools have been horible. (All bought in different stores)Line starts out shiny then get dull after an hour of use. It is stiffer, more brittle and the worst part is I have broke off fish which never has happened in the past unless I didn't check my line once in a while.
Any clues. Is it a bad batch of line? It is so bad I am ready to start looking for another brand of line. 15lb ---and 20lb lines are the ones that I am having problems with.
Thanks
Derrick

Derrick,

Check your line guides, you may have a nick in one of the guides. I haven't had any problems with Big Game, nor anytime in the past.

I use 15 lbs Big Game for Salmon and Stripers and haven't had any problems at all but if you are going to change go with Maxima.

Rich, I checked guides are good. You can actually feel the difference in the line. I also have never had any problems with the line until now. I have had line break on hook sets or just tring to get a lure un snagged.Weird. I change my line once a month on 11 reels and they all have had problems in the last 3 months.

DERRICK;
WE HERE AT JIGS HAD SOME ISSUES WITH TRILENE A FEW MONTHS AGO........WE FOUND OUT IT HAD TO DO WITH SHELF LIFE AND WHERE IT HAD BEEN STORED. I AM A USER OF TRILENE BIG GAME I BELIEVE SINCE IT WAS MARKETED. I HAVE ALWAYS USED TRILENE AND WILL NEVER CHANGE AGAIN, I TRIED A DOZEN TIMES TO CHANGE. THERE IS NO BETTER LINE. I HAVE STORED IT IN MY BOAT AND HAVE HAD IT GO BAD EXTREMELY FAST, DUE TO HEAT AND COLD IN THE ROD LOCKERS. I HAVE STORED IT IN GARAGE, AND AGAIN, OPEN STORAGE GARAGE AND WEATHER IS A FACTOR. ASK THE DEALER HOW LONG IT HAS BEEN ON THE SHELF, NOTICE DUST IN THE SHOP OR ON THE LINE, TEMPERATURE IN THE SHOP ETC, ALL HAS EFFECT ON THE LINE............BUT; BOTTOM LINE IS THIS, WE BELIEVE THERE IS NO BETTER LINE THAN TRILENE BIG GAME......WE ARE GIVING AWAY SPOOLS OF IT AT OUR JIGS TOURNAMENT THIS APRIL, ALL DONATED BY TRILENE PURE FISHING..

THANK YOU
JIGS

I have recently had problems with my last few spools as well...I was breaking fish off like crazy...I came to the conclusion that it was due buying them at Wal-mart, I quit buying it there and bought some from Fishermans warehouse and haven't had any problems since! I think the line at Wal Mart was just OLD!! Now I stay away from Wal mart at all costs!

Derick,
Are you using original Big Game, or the new Hi-Test? what pound?
Just wondering for reference to your issue. I would like to know more.

I've heard talk that there might be an issue, but i haven't personally seen any issues with my use of either Big Game or Hi-Test; and i have a lot of it.

Certainly, Berkley stands by their product, so if you have issues with the line you bought, you should do 1 of 2 things.
a) take it back to the place of purchase and get a new spool or your money back.
-or-
b) call Pure Fishing (owners of Berkley) or visit their website and talk to them. They'll surely send you out some new stuff and will want to hear about your problems. it may help them too.
heres the site: http://www.purefishing.com/menu.cfm?p_menu=330&cm=330
just click on the Berkley logo and then you can find under "about Us" a contact number or email address.

Good Luck,

You got a bad batch that's gone bad on the shelf. This is a proven product. Buy it from a high volume retailer (Cabela's, Bass Pro, or a local shop that does alot of business). The stuff is sensitive to heat and especially UV. That goes for all nylon monos. If it's sitting near a window in the sun, don't buy it.
