Best products for cleaning and waxing gelcoat?

Post by Lookin4Bass »

Just got back from a four day club tournament at Clear Lake and despite having washed my boat there's still a sort of slime on the gelcoat.

I washed it using a car wash soap which I mixed lighter than I would have for my truck.

Any recommendations on the best products for washing then waxing the gelcoat?

NoSweatMist protects your boat, unlike other products.
Sorda like sunscreen.
If you apply it before you go out you won't get as sunburn.
I hope that makes sense.

Basstraveler migh have a slightly biased opinion of nosweatmist!! It is, however, the best product I have used for caring for your boat.....easy to use, and does an excellent job of cleaning, and protecting your investment. Give it a try, you'll be impressed.

No Sweat Mist no doubt. The Hardon spot remover works great for getting the spots off my Merc. You just need to remember to come behind it with fresh water to remove the product. Then apply the mist, and use the marine polish twice a year. The mist has a UV protectant in it too, and that's something none of the competition has. Good stuff!!!!

Sieg,

Do you have anything for medium to heavy oxidation? The Skeeter I just bought has a fair amount of oxidation on the navy blue top cap. I am getting a suppy of No Sweat Mist to use but I want to get the top cap de-oxidized before using the Mist. I also will probably need to get some polish for it too but I see you have that handled already.

Any suggestions for the oxidation?

Auggie,
My boat had significant oxidation on it when I bought it also. I used 3M Marine cleaner & wax to remove it. It took some elbow grease but it did a pretty good job. You may be able to use something heavier that will take it off with a little less effort but I was scared of going to heavy and leaving fine scratches. Once you do get the oxidation off be sure to keep a UV protectant on it because it will come back quickly if you don't (I learned the hard way). Good luck.

Justin,

That is what makes me nervous, getting scratches from something gritty and making it worse.
I have a bottle of the 3M you are talking about from Wal-Mart and was going to try it when I get my boat back from the engine rebuild. I was just picking Sieg's brain to see if he had something similar in his product line. If not, I will try the 3M Cleaner wax.....unless someone comes up with a horror story about it between now and then :x

Thanks for the suggestion, :D

Here ya go Auggie - http://www.nosweatmist.com/pages/products.php

No Sweat Mist Boat Buff Marine Polish w/PTEF
16 oz. bottle

- PTEF is the slickest, non-stick material ever developed - it repels water and oil based stains and deposits, making cleanup quick and easy.
- Specially formulated for use on fiberglass, metal, plexiglass and painted surfaces.
- Special UV inhibitors guard against fading and chalking.
- Lasts up to 4 to 5 times longer than other marine waxes.
- Can be applied over old wax or polish.
- Repels marine deposits on boat bottoms.

Is specially formulated for use on gelcoat and clearcoat boats and new car finishes. It contains a small amount of abrasive that is sufficient to clean off minor oxidation, grime, and stains, but not enough to cause wear if used 2 to 3 times a year. UV inhibitors are blended into the product to greatly reduce fading and chalking/oxidation.

Unlike old-fashioned waxes that merely stick to the surface, Boat Buff Marine Polish with PTEF actually bonds to treated areas. Because of this boding action, the product will last up to four times longer than waxes. Oil, gas, diesel fuel, pollutants in the air and water cannot get through the protective barrier provided by Boat Buff Marine Polish with PTEF so the boat or car's finish is protected even when exposed to the harshest conditions.

Between polishing, use No Sweat Mist Quick Spray Shine Enhancer regularly to maintain a high-gloss shine and protect the treated surface.

That's exactly what I was talking about....(I feel kinda stupid since it was on the damn link he gave to begin with)  :x

Thanks Gator, I appreciate the link. :D

Have you or anyone here used this particular product in this application? I'm sure it is good stuff if it works like the No Sweat Mist I have heard so many good things about. Will it also make me a better fisherman?!?!?!?!?!?!? Will it make my hair grow back.....or make my wife more understanding to my fishing needs?

Just how miraculous IS this stuff?

I need all of the help I can get!

I have only used the spray shine enhancer and the water spot remover...I haven't had a need for the boat buff yet. As with all the other products, it does what it says and should take care of any minor oxidation that you have.
