Best Fluorocarbon line for the money???

Post by BigBossMan »

I know it has been asked before but with so many fluorocarbon lines on the market, what would be the best fluoro line for the money? Thanks...

I've been using Seaguar InvisX for a while now and have had very few problems. Primarily I use 10-20 lb test. It's not the cheapest, but so far I've been very happy with its performance and durability.

Would I be wasting my money with P-line Fluorocarbon, Maxima fluoro or Berkley Vanish. I don't know if it's a misprint but Tackle Warehouse has Triple Fish Fluoro for 4# @ $4.99 - 25# @ $11.99 200 yards.
How would these fluoro's rate? Or, you get what you pay for?

I'm starting to HATE p-line. Maybe it's just me, but there's WAAAAY to much memory/ it's too stiff. I do like Maxima though. Very sensitive. When I put it on my loomis gl3 rod, I feel like I have sonar!

I have used the Berkley Vanish for quite a while now and think it works just fine for the price. I also like the fact that it has very little memory for a floro line.

If spooled correctly on a spinning rod it works great too!

P line has too much memory, maxima is awesome stuff, vanish is pretty good, but my first choice is always GAMMA, the floro is pretty expensive, but on mead i always just use the copolymer. just my .02

For MY MONEY, I buy the Cabelas ProLine Fluorocarbon. Cannot beat that $25 for 1850 yards of 6# test or 1575 yards of 8# test. Plus their lines are EXCELLENT! Been using them for 2-3 years already.

BigBossMan!!! Don't wast your money on P-line Floro. Its sucks. aside from what the otheres have said about line memory and stiffness, It also gets brittal and when you least expect it, it will break off on a hook set. But Don't take my word for it BBM! just go out and have one rod spooled up in P-Line Floro and othere in Maxima Floro and see the differance for your self. try them both out for more that just one trip and you will see. what i say is a fact.
Sure i would'nt mine Sagar floro or Sagui but i'm not going to spend $21 plus on a filler spool , I don't like to throw my money away! believe me when i tell you that I try almost everything and even "Vanish" sucks thats why they had to try a different formula a few year ago. I Fish a heck of alot so i'm not BS'n you when i give you this info. Maxima Florocarbin is the best line i have used and for the price , you cant beat it. but if you want cheaper than that go with Yosury florocarbin. its not bad for the price but i would only use it for pre-fishing. anyways that is just my 2 cents and words to live by. If you do try Maxima Floro, send me and E-Mail with the thanks for the info and a Check so that i can buy myself some more. lol Maxima is one of the most sensitive and strongest floros on the Market espiecally the 8# test. thats some strong line Booooy!!!

Are you going to use flurocarbon as a main line?

i have had a few rods loaded with flurocarbon and it was for ripbaits, spinnerbaits, and jigs. But nowadays i used mainly braid but still with a flurocarbon leader. I use P-Line and it nevers nails me. if i were to toss out a topwater lure and do a ton of casting, not worry about the inconsistency performance braid offers, I like this new mono called Toray. Great stuff.

Best line for the money are definitely the key words here. Berkley Vanish is hands down the answer to this question! Wal-Mart sales it for as cheap as it gets. I have yet to have a problem with Vanish. It is very limp, strong, and great knot strength (keep in mind you have to wet it before cinching the knot). I have the hardest problem breaking off when I am hung up sometimes that it almost gets annoying. That is definitely a good thing though! Best of luck!

If'n yer looking for the best buy fer yer buck, the Berkeley Transition is outstanding, and like Justin said, can be bought at Wal-Mart!!!!!

If you want the best fluoro yer money can by, go with Koreah Chemical's Sugoi, OEM'd fer Yamamoto.

Cooch,

Wait, Walmart sells Transistion for $15-16 per spool of 250 yards. That's 6 cents/yard. But that's WAY more expensive than the Cabelas ProLine Fluorocarbon at $25 per 1,850 yards for 6# or 1575 yards for 8# test. This means that the Cabelas ProLine Fluorocarbon is only 1.4 ~ 1.6 cents per yard or roughly 1/4th the cost of Transition from Walmart!!. So how can that Transition line be the best bang for the buck?!

Just my $.02. I use Vanish, Trasition, and Yo-zuri and have never had any problems with them. I have used the Stren before and broke off way too many times. I also tried P-line once and won't use it ever again for the reasons listed above. Stick with Berkeley Vanish and Transition and you really can't go wrong with those.

Guys,

I would suggest you revisit your knot when using light line Fluorocarbon. I had the same breakoff problem when I first started using fluoro ... I would tie it onto the hook, pull and it would breakoff in my hands. I initially blamed it on the line, but as it turns out, it was the knot I was using (Palomar). Since then I've switched to the San Diego knot and I've had very little problems with breakage.

In fact, just last week, I was swinging 1-2# fish in the boat on 6# test Vanish Transition (I was just testing it out).

I'll say this one more time. When using light line fluorocarbon, DO NOT USE THE PALOMAR KNOT

The best flouro for the money is Bass Pro Excel Flouro. KVD uses it.
You can buy 1000yds for the same price as three smaller spools of the higher priced flouro, and it fishes the same.

Mac,

First, I would say that the is more predominate with light line (<10#). Though I believe it still happens with heavier line test (14-17#).

As an experiment, I would like for you to do a test ... the Palomar knot is not all that different than an overhand knot. Basically it wraps over upon itself.

Pick some heavy fluorocarbon line and tie an overhand knot and pull tight. Then perform a shock test on it by pull hard on the line with one hand on each end of the knot. You'd be amazed how easily that line will break.

Now repeat it with nylon mono ... huge difference between fluorocarbon and nylon mono.

When I did this, I was able to snap 20# fluorocarbon by my hand. I have a hard time breaking 8 or 10# nylon mono.

The way I learned this was from trying Vanish. It would break on hookset. After 2-3 times, I threw away the line. I talked to the Berkely rep and he said the 'new' lines are much better and to give it a try again. I did ... broke off at hookset again! Had been a huge proponent of the Palomar then.

Then I began trying different knots. First was a double Palomar and it worked much better. But still would suffer frequent breakoffs at hookset. I did some research and seems like I was not the only one. I ended up settling on the San Diego knot and have had only infrequent breakoffs. Usually it would break up the line rather than at the knot.

I use the ProLine fluorocarbon $25 per 1/4 pound spool of line (1850yrds for 6# ~ 750yrds of 15# line. It is definitely the cheapest of all the fluorocarbon lines I've tried and it's great line!!

You can see the knot here

Takes some getting used to tying it. But it's worthwhile. One little "trick" I've learned is to loop the line over your pinky finger and you can use your thumb and index finger to wrap the line.

I've used Cabela's Fluoro, and like most fluoros I've used, I couldnt git it off my reel fast enough. Some folks have that same opinion with every fluoro out there. I've been using fluoro fer almost 10 years now, I receive a lot of samples and buy new stuff all the time. I have my preferences, and those are what I recommend to others to use. My gauge is the 16-25# lines, and if I break off or feel uncomfy with these, I'm of the opinion that the lighter tests can't possibly be any better from that manufacturer.

Hey Cooch I have always been a fan of the seguar floro. I am currently in the market to purchase some new 8 pound as that is the only floro I use for all other applications I use regular green maxima. I want to purchase a bulk spool of the floro as the 200 yard fillers just dont do it for me as it seem I always waste about 50 yards of those 200 yard fillers. I was wondering does the Yamamoto Sugoi come in bulk spools like say 1000 yards give or take a little?

I'm not sure ... I would imagine that getting the knot together w/ a double line might be somewhat tricky ... I've never tried it. So if you do, please report back here on your experience.
DAKINE198 wrote:what is the difference between the two ( No-vis and Proline)

I'm not sure about that. When I first bought the ProLine, I was attracted to it because of price. Prior to switching to the Proline fluoro, I was using Seaguar and was looking for a less expensive alternative.
Cooch wrote:My gauge is the 16-25# lines, and if I break off or feel uncomfy with these, I'm of the opinion that the lighter tests can't possibly be any better from that manufacturer.
Cooch, I'll have to agree with you that this ProLine is a bit stiff (especially true w/ heavier line test, >14#'s) and that Vanish is softer; I in fact am trying Vanish right now as well.

BUT ... on a cost basis, the Proline cannot be beat at the lower pound test ... where else can you buy 1,850 yards of (6#) fluoro for $25 (or 1000 yrds of 12# for $25)?

HOWEVER, at the higher line tests (>12#), the Vanish in bulk is equal or slightly cheaper even than the Cabelas Proline.

So, we're BOTH right! :D

Here's a quick cost analysis of some of the lines mentioned above:
